JXD S601 [DEVELOPING]

PRice wise it would have to be < $150 otherwise it would be getting into competition with the heavy hitters.

Change the nub to an analogue stick.
I actually love the caanoo analog stick, believe it or not, of all the analog controllers I've used those would have to by far be me favorite in terms of analog controller in a compact design... problem with the nintendo/microsoft/sony designs, they are just too damn big for a pocket gaming device ( vita excluded ) also worry about them getting caught on stuff or over time wearing out and losing their "center" if used too much or pushed in one direction for too long had a N64, wii, and 360 controller all do this.

the dpad like the xbox 360, snes, lynx, or pandora would be good, I'm a fan of the " T " design (when looking at it from the side) when it comes to dpads, as I'm sure many of you are as well.

here's the challenge though, I'm not actually designing this, I have no money invested... JXD is, and they're not going to dump a whole lot of money in development into just one device. I'm really confident they do however want to work with me to get something out to the retro gaming community, that was my main spiel when I started talking to them about what demographics they're going for and what not, and I think that's the only reason they're paying attention to me. So what I'm going to have to do is to have them re-use stuff they have made before... just in the right combination that will work for us, not actually design anything new. They want cheap, and they want fast out the door. Little R&D dollars as possible.

device A was good except for x y and z

device B sucked completely but it had x which was good

a bunch of those put together would make an awesome handheld.... if I ask for too much or turn this into a pipe dream device it's just plain not going to happen. But give them a couple tips on what their customers actually want, that they already do, not just what they think we want (one of the biggest complaints I'm sure) and I think we might actually see something from this. She might just be humoring me... but why would they bother ya know?

also as an update it's too late for the S601, they're already moving forward with the original design and had been since I started talking to them, "too late to make any changes to the model now" but they're looking for ideas for the one after this one.

I would go for this design . Features a slide up screen with a real keyboard or as per the second image, another touch screen underneath.

The beauty of having another touchscreen is that it could be used as a touch keyboard or Gaming controls (ala Razor) or it can act as the bottom screen for GBA SP, DS Emulation - All bases covered

Id pay $350 with one of these with decent specs and a touch screen screen underneath (second image)

Android's not the answer if it's being implemented by one of these one-console-per-month manufacturers like JXD because they're not able/willing to do it well.

I wish someone would utilise the new JZ4770 from ingenic because it's a beast and would likely be very quickly hacked to run OpenDingux. Couple it with a 4 inch 640x480 screen and a couple of analog sticks and we'd have a new dingoo a320 on our hands except with excellent ps1 and probably tolerable n64 too.

you are aware that most if not all of these handhelds have basically the same closed source OS wrapped with different GUI depending on the reseller right? They get their OS from the people that make their chipset for them. The maintainers are not JXD and YINLIPS etc... it's whoever they're all getting their chips from.

Like the pandora for example... if TI would have supplied the angstom to OP, and everyone else that bought their version of the OMAP.. (well they kind of did with the DSP but that's a different story) OP would have just added their bits for the display hardware and analog sticks etc. But all the wifi, BT, DSP, audio processor and most of the internal components... all that would have already been built in, they would just customize the screen dimensions etc.

This is basically the level these one-console-a-month people operate at like JXD, YINLIPS, DD and the countless unbranded models are able to spit these out so quick, they just make the cases these things fit into, the level of software development is extremely minimal. They make plastic molds basically and sell to resellers. That's their role.

Anyway...

Anything to push these guys into the direction of a open source or standard OS the better. Yes ideally have them release their source and put opendingux would be ideal but would be a lot harder to convince them to do that. They are more scared of competitors over there than they want to appease our tinkering needs. Trying to talk this company to talk their company into giving up their source or chaining the way they do business... in a different country... with such a language barrier... I just don't even... I mean I like the concept, I just don't think it would ever happen.

YINLIPS and JXD are obviously getting their chipset from the same company and that company seems to see the advantage of using android already.. after a few releases we might be able to nail them down into releasing the source code like they are legally obligated to do from the get go (not talking about patent laws) but licensing laws they might just do it. (probably still won't... they are still release illegal Windows CE devices without proper licensing) but anywhoo..

most companies like this see going the open source route as "giving my work out for free" or losing their edge on the market. But with android it's trendy and they are able to take advantage of a lot of free work without having to give up a whole lot. I don't know.. think I'm beating a dead horse here... but that's the reason you don't see so many jumping on the opendingux bandwagon. That and still a lot of their customer base is just local market idiot consumers that don't give a crap... see something that looks like and iphone OS and wants to buy one.

We are still by far the niche of the market for these gaming handhelds... even though we're a bigger percentage of customer base for this kind of handheld than the tinkerer is for most mobile devices. (iphone and the like)

EDIT: you got to think too...if these guys even cared remotely about the open source community as their main demographic they would have put OP ltd out of business a long time ago... they got the resources to mass produce these things at a fraction of the cost and parts and assembly all in the same geographic location... it wouldn't even be a competition. Thank goodness for that right? ;)

Swith the D pad and Nub. I hate trying to hold the bottom of the PSP to use the Nub. I have small hands so it makes it awkward to do that and use the should buttons.

little question have it multitouch?

and i have some idears for a design i will upload a picture soon ;)

These systems are way too underpowered we need dual or quad core dual analog nubs 1GB of dd3 to really push handheld emulation forward ,until then we'll just get the same generic emulators weve been getting for the last 3 years im sure people would pay 50 75 pounds more for that spec list so whats stopping someone taking the plunge.

it will be good enough to n64 & ps1 emulation which isn't really seen on these cheap handhelds right now

also perfect 60fps zero frameskip snes and sega genesis emulation which is another first for these handhelds

I also would like to see some beefy performance out of these things, but honestly at this point we're at a lack of a "good enough" option ... this looks pretty good if you ask me.

well ps1 was perfect on the psp n64 is on the pandora my point is people are not going to get excited about emulation like say 3 years ago unless higher end systems are done ie dreamcast and ps2 but devs are not going to touch them till decent hardware specs appear every new system appearing is single core cpu we need multi core plus multi threaded rendering or cores running symetrically to come close to seeing these systems emulated whats the point of emulating the same old systems over and over again? we'ed all get pretty bored.

+1 - Well said

I think the idea here is cheap chineese handheld... this undshoots in price and overshoots in performance of both the pandora and even the PSP

the quoted price for this is $79 a unit.. I still think this is an unfilled niche, does all well in a small form factor and isn't garbage controlls on the cheap. You could buy almost 6 of these for the price of 1 pandora.

I do agree we need to see something more bleeding edge, but when was the last time you seen one of these guys spit out anything bleeding edge? It's always the sony's and samsung's and htc's that do that.

Your just proving my point these chinese companys just churn out handhelds like no tomorrow same old same old its been seen all before apart fromhdmi output what do these systems bring too the table that hasnt been done before as far as your coments on perfect emulation maybe the purist is interested but 90% couldnt tell the difference.

updated OP can buy from ishare gifts (boo) for $88.99

EDIT: just ordered mine, once I get it I'll start modding it and release some custom roms and guides for it (android market etc)

EDIT2: funfact isharegifts uses the same ordering system as ED's shop ;)
