It could be we're there!

Regarding the tantalum caps; I don't quite know where the project is at sourcing the caps or if the problem is being sorted another way but I was thinking that if we have to use 'conflict materials' (and probably do, unwittingly) then is it worth donating a percentage of proceeds to charities that help people in these war torn countries?

I read a little about this organisation working in Africa and I'm sure there are plenty of others. Making a charitable donation could be a way of offsetting the need for conflict materials in the pyra. In the UK corporate charitable donations are tax deductible so maybe dragonbox.de wouldn't lose out financially (assuming the German system is similar) and it seems, to me at least, to be something that would fit well with the pyra ethos. This sort of practise also has positive marketing leverage too.

Just a thought....

Great idea. But please let the buyers decide what to donate-to. My suggestion would be https://antiwar.com. But let us decide for ourselves what politics we want to support, don't force our choice.

This. I want to donate to warlords.

@sm0kew0n, I know the intention is to make it less harmful, but tell that to the dead people and their surviving relatives. It isn't quite the same as refusing to support the problem outright.

Hi all :)

@EvilDragon : regarding the tantalum issue, I think the best option would be to get in touch with the Fairphone project:

I like what they are trying to do. It may not work since there companies can put on a show and keep the children away on the day of a visit. I have other criticisms, but I don't know enough about the cultures in that region to know if my concerns would matter. It does come down to the companies, including manufacturers, to ensure such attempts are successful, and that requires money. Are companies (and consumers) willing to accept higher costs?

I thought most of the mines were pretty cool. I don't know that I would be able to work long hours everyday in some of them (trying to squish down enough to fit in that one, and squatting the whole time inside while working, probably wouldn't work out so well for people around my height or taller). If only there were small people they could get to work in such tiny mines. :p

I really hope we can reach the beginning of mass production by may/june at least or sooner... I feel it will be a few more months of adjustments/fixes to the Pyra at this rate.

I will wait but it is getting long in the tooth. However I still want the Pyra. I only play dreamcast games these days and not current gen.

I use a hearing aid. Whenever I use my Pandora on a brightness setting on anything other than max, there is a very noticeable buzz (which grows with lower brightness) in the telecoil mode (a mode that makes the hearing aid convert electromagnetic signals into sound, used for i.e. hearing aid equivalents of headsets).

How is the Pyra in this regard?

As a hearing aid user I feel your pain (Although I don't use the telecoil function for streaming). EMI is quite a big thing with the Pandora, it'd be interesting to see if the pyra is any worse.

on a brightness setting on anything other than max,
And off too? (minimal brightness)?

For recording:
When I record audio I turn the screen off to get the least amount of humm/hissing.

For listening:
I switched from in-ear to big muffin headphones and because they require more oompf to drive them, the hiss is gone on those.

I guess the minimum setting which is completely off wouldn't generate EM hum, but I don't wear hearing aids so I wouldn't be sure.

These last two posts have been about hearing aids, not headphones by the way. They have a little 'T' setting which is explicitly designed to pick up the EM frequencies generated by a coil in the earpiece of telephone sets for example - I didn't think you were meant to use it in general use, but I guess once you've set it on it might be a bit of a faff turning it off again.

As far as I've heard, the Pyra is supposed to use a higher frequency to illuminate its backlight. I'd guess this would result in a higher tone in your hearing aid, and if that's hypersonic to you then that would not be a problem.
