Hehe Interesting Thread In The Gizmondo Forum

MOnths ago when I heard about the gizmondo and all it's features I was intersted until I found out 3 things about it
- it's fugly more fugly than the nokia N-ghay-ge (main reason)
- built in internal battery
- kinda expensive. about 2x the price of the 2x (no pun intended). unless you get the adware version... (gotta admit the gizmondo can do everything including.. including gps and adware :p. But for it's credit it do come with alot of features
- 2.8" screen.

at the time I was looking for a portable console and the psp looks like my option till I saw the Gizmondo but didn't like it. and I don't want the psp because it seems to have short baattery life and uses sony memory stick. (I got plenty of SD cards around already)

I stumbled upon the gp2x from another forum. now i"m just waiting for the unit to haveit's quirks fixed and the homebrews to come out then I'm in for one

geeze as I read more about the gizmondo it kinda sucks.

they have a "smart ad" version that cost $170 less than normal..

read their descrption of the "smart adds"

http://www.smartadds.com/FAQ.pdf

they make it sound like it's a good thing ...

I was think Gizmondo died. Are they still alive? I was think their company closed because mafia stuff...

Can you say me what the device has to run? :/

Well the company reported that their revenue is less than 1% of their losses... so yeah, they're doing badly... I wonder if this'll kill VuGo, Tiger's other red-headed stepchild...

^nope, the company coded the system against it... It takes SD cards, but theres no option to run code... For games I think you insert the SD into the unit and it will automatically run... No menus for executing programs or anything... For games also the Data has to be signed to run...

The thing that gets me chuckling is how they all say GIZ.. You know, if you sounded that G out differently, it'd sound awefully funny.. Anyone else find this ammusing.

Some of the games looked fun.. but yeah. not worth it.

never had ANY interest in the gizmondo. the idea i even scoffed at. the whole reason i bought a psp was because of homebrew and emulators, and now since i can't (really) have that, the gp2x is the best thing in the world. and then the gizmondo only accepts 'signed' software? FTS. plus, ADWARE? what were they thinking?

i think they were thinking ngage.

Um, that's the other Tiger... Game Park is not the only confusing handheld company around. :p

Yeah, and you can play a game named "Sticky Balls" on it.

I wonder who was stupid enough to invest into the Gametrac... It was doomed from the start. It never had any chance. Tiger Telematics were only interested in stealing money to buy fast cars, they never even tried to make it a success!

Heh, it was the swedish mob, "uppsalamaffian" that did it. They had 3 people working as executives for Gizmondo. They managed make 170 million euro disappear in 6 months. I'm surprised Gizmondo is still alive :)

I think u are all wrong there are some big things happening at gizmondo at the moment, gizmondo is here to stay.
The GP2X is very nice but the giz is a much better quality machine the GP2X feels cheap by comparison.
At the end of the day they are 2 both very different machines by small companies trying to compete with the likes of sony/nintendo we should be supporting both machines not slagging each of them off.
GP2X will be good for emulation and the giz will be cool for 3d and gps stuff (the GPS works very very well by the way).

Gizmondo Navigator 2006 is powered by CoPilot, which turns the Gizmondo into a high quality voice-guided Satellite Navigation System.

now that is a good enough reason to buy one, seems cheaper than most Sat Navs.

When do we get one for the GP2X?

Hope the Gizmondo thing works out for you though supaimposta, it does look ugly though

I was looking at their website and ordering price.

by default I dont' think the gizmondo comes with gps navigation software.

the regular package is $399 (it is $229 if u pick the adware version)

and navigation software/map is an additional $259.

so total fo Jizmondo + navigation is $$660
tho if u think about it that's in the same price range as other standalone car navigation gps and the jiz can do more

When we get the GPS SDIO card + GP2X drivers.

In a second hand shop near me is a gizmondo smart ads.... Those things sound bad- both in the buisness sence and trying to use one.
I wonder if those smart ads are crackable (i.e. to be removed)...

Hopefully when the Gizmondo fully dies someone gets an open OS to run on it, then I could get one off of ebay cheap. It's GPU is made by nVidia, so Linux should run it ok. A few companies got Linux dev kits with that had that GPU in it, but I'm not sure if the drivers are public. Anyway, get rid of all the proprietary/DRM crap so I can run some home-brew games and it would be an awesome handheld.

Thanx,
Stan

Probably, but then somebody at gizmondo will track you down using your GPS signals, send your Gizmondo an SMS message that will cause it to self-destruct, then throw you in a cell with everybody else who defied SMART ADDS.
