Gpxile Magazine/site Launches!

Nice one Guys !

As I believe that 99% of your readers will read the magazine on a screen and won't print it, I suggest to choose a "lanscape" orientation for the next issue... It will better fit on all screens !

If you need a hand for the next layout, I'd be happy to help !

But what about the few who will print it :p Personal preference of mine is to read on portrait page. I really hate double page spreads in magazines, that make it landscape. But it's up to Nova as he has the final say.

Hmmm, a landscape sounds good, but yeah, I like to read mine in portrait.

Then again, it wouldn't be impossible to create two sets of templates...

But what about the majority who won't print it ? :p
You should make life easier for your readers, and maybe not follow your personnal preference

Well, landscape doesn't actually provide anymore text space. It makes text non linear and 70%+ of PC users have a 4:3 ratio screen better suited to portrait views. I suppose for the 30% with wide-screen displays it may be better, but its not like you lose anything scrolling down :p

I REALLY REALLY hate having to scroll sideways on landscape pages. To the extent I don't bother with the second half of the page :p but yes, you are right and we shouldn't follow personal preference but what the audience does.

Edit: Ok, I made a poll here

I did say I may do it...

This is fantastic, great job guys! The visual format is fun and has that free creative feel to it, good stuff. I was pleasantly surprised with the content too, lots of interesting things there. Good luck with future issues :)

Edit: the GP32-related content is a very nice touch too, I didn't expect it!

Kicking me is probablly the correct response.

You're right on with the "popular among developers who lack the time or inclination to write and maintain their own GUIs" comment.

All of the "features" of RACE! have an explanation. Unfortunatly, many of them are along the lines of "I'd rather put the effort in on ___ than work on the ___."

The intro WAV was kinda a last-minute deal. I really wanted to emulate the BIOS that plays the intro sound, but it didn't go as planned. The next option was to just play the sound, so I ripped the sound from the old SNK website in a quick-hack sort of way.

Anyway, nice mag. Thanks for putting in the effort!

@Flavor: Those comments on RACE are from my GP2X vs PSP showdown from a GP2X Emulation thread I posted, which Nova included in this issue with my permission. Although I could link to the forum thread, let's get people reading GpXile instead ;)

Sorry if that came off as abusive. It's just that the *incredibly loud and obnoxious jingle* plays at MAX volume. Seriously, I began popping out my earbuds before booting RACE. Couldn't you make it quieter? Otherwise, it's the best Neo Geo Pocket emulator for a handheld, at least among the handhelds I've tested. :D

I can't speak to the gp32_console

BTW as I predicted, I've caught fifty kinds of flak on the boards for 1) the SNES part of my review only testing one game, albeit my favorite, and 2) not comparing GBA emulation. I've taken my lumps :p

Heh, Taking punishment for what I didn't write :p I never call anything outright crap. Heh, well, I could review Crapong. I'm pretty sure I could call that crap, in 50 ways :p

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I guess it's related to the mag.

Ah, don't worry about it. I've heard it all before. My projects don't often become favorites, and I think it's because I decide to put time into the "meat" of them and then I often ignore the UI.

My only two real GP2X releases (Bubble Train and RACE!) both suffer from this. I guess I also did Net-Bubble, but that's a whole different issue.

Anyway, about the WAV, I think you could just load the WAV itself into a sound editor and reduce the volume. That'd be the easiest fix.

In other news, I did get RACE! running on the NDS. It's about 1/4 to 1/2 speed depending on the game, though.

I think you'd find that RACE! is the only NGPC emu that's 100% usable on the GP32. The credit goes to Thor for that effort, though.

I know what you mean. Try having your work place well in a competition. It's always a joy to read why you don't deserve it. Luckily, it's not enough to offset the initial feeling of winning.

Just wanted to say that since the PSP went down in price $30, I was pondering the idea of getting one strictly for homebrew, but after reading your review I see that I'm in good hands with my gp2x and I probably shouldn't bother with a PSP unless I just HAVE to get a fast PSX emu (which may also be coming to the gp2x ala Zottd). I really liked that comparison of the different emus -thanks again!

Don't hold your breath, mate. That's more gp3x material. What you *can* look foward to is the great GBA emu he's working on :)
