Gph Is Working On A New Handheld (codename: Gpx3)

Yes, I know, it's unlikely, but what would you do if a console of the above description *was* released? Shit your pants? Spontaneously combust?

I suppose it would depend on what you could do with it? (Eg. if the softwares locked down, such as PSP/DS/etc, but someone hacked it, would it still be interesting?)
I would buy it that is what I would do :)

Imagine the Amiga 640 x 400 workbench on it, then when it goes to a 320x200 game it would just double the pixels evenly. You could run ST in every resolution mode, you could run MacII full res, PC VGA games such as OpenTTD would run without the nasty scaling down or scrolling. Even PSX had a few games that ran at 640x480. Terminal programs would have alot of room for text, picture viewers would be razor-sharp. For 320X240-ish games a simple 2X double and they would look just as they do now on the GP2X nice and clean. Plus we could brag about it being much higher res (more than double) than the PSP  It, would be the ultimate handheld for years to come.

If it was the next GP2X you wouldn't need to worry about "cracking" it as it would come pre-hacked. Hopefully (if you are dreaming might as well go for it :p ) it would be completely backwards compatible with GP2X AND GP32 by use of a wrapper or emu and it would just double the pixels and look the same as they do now. You would have a big pool of great emus etc from day 1 with no waiting.

Depends. If it were backwards compatible, then sure, I'd probably jump right on the bandwagon and see how emulators ran at 360MHz (especially SNES, which would be full speed at that one, and PSx which might be approaching some sensible level of playability), but if not, I'd definitely wait a while. The 2x has a lot of life left in it yet.

I must say I like the sound of there being an FPU on the main processor though... Anyone know if the ARM946T is as bad as the 940T to squeeze performance out of? Is it still lacking an MMU?

Of course, at the moment, it's just a joke. But hey - sometime in the future...

I read this only today, and thought it was real >_> I had my "But I still want my BoB" post ready too. damnit. I hate april fools.

480/200 = 2.4... you can't evenly stretch 320x200 to 640x480 :p
You don't have to. You can just double the pixels and it would have the small borders on top like now on the Gp2X.

I'd preorder and start downloading N64 Roms. :)

It's funny that sam mentioned gullible, because it's actually the only real word that doesn't show up on dictionary.com OR Merriam webster online.

Seriously!

Also please lol file this, it was clever dispite us gp users being smart B)

You are way too gullible.

acctually way too trusting
I never lie and I expect other to do the same
so
I take anything people say without a snicker for true :(
(I know, bad idea, right? well I am working on it  )

http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/gullible

There, you will notice under the synonyms "naive". You see Purple, some words in the English language have other words that mean the same.

Well as far as fantasy hardware goes, this was pretty on-target.

TI makes the OMAP 2420 which is found in the Nokia N800 and N95. Go to youtube and search for 3d + N95 to see the OpenGL capabilities.

The real porn will come with the OMAP 3420 and 3430, which feature a hardware 2d processor that can encode full DVD resolution H242, MPEG4 etc and do fancy filtering effects, and can do OpenGL 2.0 ES which features pixel-shaders. The core is scary fast, clocking up to 1GHZ and delivering up to 2000 dmips - easily 10x the power of the ARM 920, by some accounts. Oh, and power drain will be at 2420 levels or *lower*.

Now I just hope and pray that we'll see the full feature set supported in some kind of linux handheld with good gaming controls. It's a good bet that the successor to the Nokia N800 will feature that chipset, but whether it will have gaming ergonomics is more questionable.

Whoever delivers a 3430 linux-based pocket device with good controls will be getting my money. With luck, 2008 will be a very good year.

Nice, although I'm wondering about cost and who is going to make one of those, *and* make it able to run third party software without hacks.

I guess most people will just make do with the GP3X; it won't be a ghz, but at least it'll have hardware 3d, opengl, etc as Evildragon says ;)

Thanks for your SNES emu work Squidge. The gp2x has faster memory and framebuffer than my Nokia 770 - especially with that MMU hack.

Is there any word on what GP3x will use as a chipset? If it's ARM 11 based like the TI OMAP 2420 then we should be able to see roughly how fast it will be by porting SquidgeSNES to the Nokia 800 :)

Still very jealous of the gp2x scene. I'm one of .. well.. only THREE people doing emus on the Nokia tablets.
