GPD have publicly announced a new product line that will be on Indiegogo around Feb 15th

It's the GPD MicroPC which is targeted at Netwoirk Engineers and Sys admins, but also has a wider audience for those wanting a UMPC

It will go up on Indiegogo for $299 , and will be powered by a Intel N4100. It will also have a 6" screen and a number of ports including a

  • Intel N4100 processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD 2242 drive (replaceable)
  • 3 USB 3.0 Type A ports (full-size USB ports)
  • 1 USB Type-C port (for charging and data)
  • 1 MicroSD slot
  • 1 Gigabit RJ45 port
  • 1 HDMI port (standard size)
  • 1 Serial port
  • Wifi Dual Band 5GHz
  • Bluetooth
  • Charger with PD (Power Delivery) and Standard support (5V charger), both by the same USB Type-C port (The device will come with a PD charger)
  • 6200mAh battery (2 x 3200mAh)
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Touchpad

Also has a switch to turn the fan off. The GPD MicroPC is built tough in the spirit of the Panasonic Toughbook so that it can withstand being thrown in bags etc.

I don't like touchpads, but here it has its stuff oriented for use with thumbs. I'd like to try that.

Serial port sounds to me like working with ancient and/or industrial hardware.

The price is great. Shame it has no gaming controls ;)

Serial, probably because of the datacenter/network devices configuration.
I used the OP with an USB serial adapter to configure switches in small closets, it's quite convenient.

I like this a lot !!

But, where are the Function keys ?! o_O (Yeah, it's time to discuss about that !!)

Those are pretty old renders. It will look a bit different. In regards to the Function keys , they are on the number keys.

It will also have three mouse buttons . Left/ Middle / Right

As I said before, the pics above are old renders. The function keys are doubled on the number keys , just not visible on those old renders

I like having three USB 3.0 pads and a concealed µSD. If using that touchpad with the device on a flat surface though, I suspect you'd be forced to using one of your first two fingers on the right hand (or swapping between pad and buttons if you're a southpaw), which leaves the thumb dangling and potentially pressing keys, depending on what the activation force of those keys is. At a 6 inch screen though, I'm not sure whether I'd tend to use this on a flat surface (like I do with my 7 inch eeePCs) or handheld. More reviews needed I guess.

I feel like in the past I would have been really interested in this, but now it strikes me as kind of vanilla.
The keyboard doesn't look great, but I might be proven wrong when the thing is released.
At this point GPD needs to release something really special to get me interested.
I think I'm just going to solely rely on a stable of Pyras after my current laptop bites the dust.

hm kinda interested actually

but if GPD goes for the sysadmin crowd it needs

a) a good keyboard (feedback and layout / usability)
b) good linux support
c) longterm driver and bios support
d) robustness

given how fast they drop support for their devices and that the keyboards are less than stellar so far they may have a hard time with their target audience

If it did i would bail on the Pyra and I'm still considering that.

We are going on 5+ years since preorder... With no end in sight.
