I had started a thread over on their forums about a week ago and i feel like an idiot trying to explain development things that I can barely grasp .

From what I can determine Zelda Classic was made using Allegro and their is a development enviroment for gp2x that uses Allegro .

If anyone that knows what they are talking about could ring in over there on what is involved with porting this I would really appreciate that .

If you dont know what Zelda classic is it rules and you can read about it HERE . I think it would be a perfect fit for the GP2X .

Pity the source isn't open :(. You are doing fine over on the thread though and they honestly shouldn't have problems porting :).

I made a thread there too, but I guess I sounded like an idiot. I've wanted this for a while. What someone could do is make an engine that does the same thing and could use the tile sets that people have made since they are all downloadable right now. Oh, and make it open source of course. Or maybe the authors could be persuaded to open source it.

A good open engine that could use those templates and be ported to the GP2X is Secret of Eternia. The guy that wrote it is pretty cool but doesn't have the time, I have a thread there also, you should talk to him. I'm not sure if clanlib is ported yet, but that's what it uses.

Edit: Looks like he switched his forums to Sourceforge.net, so I think my thread on his page got deleted. Just start on on there and he'll reply. Like I said, he doesn't have the time, but if someone on here would help him this is something that definitely could be ported. He said it uses opengl, but that could be ripped out for the GP2X pretty easily.

Thanx,
Stan

Secret of Eternia

Port that, the Zelda Classic guys don't seem to be interested, they don't even have a Linux port, or a OSX port. They are window fanboys.

It's also pretty much the same thing, put custom tiles/sprites in and you have Zelda Classic.

Thanx,
Stan

If I remember correctly evildragon linked this and said that it would be cool if someone ported it and i agree some of those tilesets are outstanding but for now we have to wait and see and whoever takes on this challenge ill donate my kidney to them ....err just jokin

I might take a look at Secret of Eternia later, but nobody hold their breath for anything from me because I'm very very lazy. But maybe, I mean, a good coffee shop DID just open up a block from my apartment.

Edit: Actually, looks like it needs ClanLib. This does not bode well for a SOE port. :(

Well if you read the site, he is working on moving onto linux/macos/windows. At the moment it runs under dos

I asked on the ClanLib mailing list a while back and they said it wouldn't be too hard to port, it just takes someone. I guess I need to learn to code.

Bottom line is you can work on porting ClanLib and SOE to the GP2X, or you can beg the guy that coded Zelda Classic to hurry up and port it to Linux, then beg him some more to get it running on the GP2X. So you can depend on yourself or someone else. I personally think if ClanLib and SOE worked on the GP2X there is a greater chance that features would be added. By features I mean swimming, running, stuff that one or the other is missing.

Thanx,
Stan

Their is a whole team of Developers that have the source code and actively develope for it . So it isn't just one guy thier is a bunch of them .

I don't understand why he would be against open sourcing it .

Oh, it's a team? I thought it was a few guys at most. Well, some people don't open source their code because they can use it in an interview for a job. If it's open source then their name is in the code, but it doesn't look as impressive. That's usually the main reason with games anyway, if you aren't profiting from it, or can't in this case, then that would be the only logical thing holding you back from open source.

It is a great game though, and would be cool if it ran, but it's all dependent on the team.

I have played Zelda Classic and its just the same as Zelda on NES.. the Secret of Eternia looks like the SNES zelda.

it seems now that they have closed the thread, for the reason of "A triple post, advertising, and then advertising again."
