They were delivered ages ago, and they (so far) seem quite happy to clock to >720mhz. As said though, it is still nice to optimise code.
It probably is the same die, but very minor imperfections in the casting of each chip might lead to some being stable at 720, and others only at 600. I'd have thought it would be detrimental to their (TI's) reputation and sales if they start pulling an intel, like "we disabled something or other so we can sell our full featured cpu at a premium later on, only to rip you a new one again in 3-6 months after that when our next thing that gives you a raging nerd boner comes out. Thanks for the cash."
That would suck. People already get upset as soon as they hear about the latest yet to be released tech as it seems to take the shine off what they have just bought.
What, are you kidding me? My suggestion to the OP dev team: ship out the first batch as is. When the time comes for the second batch, consider upgrading to the 720s. If the 720s seem like a good deal, release a program that tests existing Pandora's for overclockability. If they cannot be overclocked beyond 720, offer a free exchange: ship back the 600 mhz only board, replace the soc, ship it home. If it can overclock to 720 (as most (if not all) of them should) then you need do nothing.
Alternatively, they can perform the test before shipping, and keep any that don't pass back for spare parts and demo models.
Not at all. That's why I said to see if it's a good deal, first. If, by the time the second batch rolls around, the 720s are the same cost as the 600s are now (or possibly even cheaper) then you lose nothing in that batches upgrade. There's even the possibility they may scrap the 600s entirely, discovering that almost all the chips coming off the line are capable of 720 mhz, with the few that don't not reaching high enough quantities to sell in bulk. The first batchers are likely to get the fastest chips out of everyone since they were never separated and we have proven how fast they run already. Of course, don't forget that 600MHz is the only official speed TI or OpenPandora Ltd. has to guarantee. We don't make the chips. I'm hoping the final number of unoverclockable Pandoras will be significantly less than 5%, however. There's also a chance that a percentage of that percentage won't care whether they can overclock or not, bringing the number that would have to be exchanged down even further.
I've read posts from you over the months and you have always come across as a highly educated person who gets it right all of the time and probably works in the industry. I'm just a bit floored by this comment though. If I were you and you were me, I would put overclocking-to-800-mhz as part of the setup and testing process though, but I assume it's an easy thing to automate which, again, might be totally wrong.
I suppose it's depends on the yield and time to test. Having to test chips at both 720 and 600 is obviously going to cost more. Usually what happens is that the 720Mhz test is simply additional and you pay for that extra test in the price. Ack, sorry, I misspoke. I didn't mean that if they couldn't overclock they'd flat out fail, but rather that you can just set them aside so that, hopefully, only overclockable ones go out. If there's only five or ten from the first batch that can't get over 600 mHz, that seems an acceptable "loss" (air quotes because you just find a different use for them) to be able to proudly announce that they can all overclock (at users own risk) to 720 or 800mhz. Client enablement and marketing hype and all that. Even if as many as 200 can't overclock, you may be able to pull something off. Maybe, I dunno.
