Cartoons

Just going off on a random tangent, does anyone know if the 2003 to 2006 Duck Dodgers TV series ever got a DVD release? I know it hasn't over here, but I'd love to know if it did elsewhere - it was pretty damn entertaining.

Don't think that series has been released on DVD but I do know that the "Green Loontern" episode from Duck Dodgers was included on the Green Lantern: First Flight 2 disc Special Edition DVD.

I thoroughly enjoy My Little Pony (And am notorious for this on the IRC channel) and I always feel the need to share the enjoyment with other people. In the case of Da|Mummy, he simply won't watch it because of its overlying traits, and therefore he never will, and I respect that. Trust me, I've tried to get him to watch this show before.

I also like Futurama. Such a great show.

one cartoon that should have never made it to Nickelodeon....but Hey Arnold...now that was a cartoon

I've so far been able to resist the temptation to see what all the hoot regarding my little pony is about. I seem to bump into things referencing it with accelerating frequency and don't know how long I can take it before caving in and watching an episode. Maybe I should bring a bottle of Jack to keep me safe from the fluffy pink ponies. :p

It's the Power Puff Girls, with ponies. It's actually remarkably well produced and scripted for a kids' show.

It also shuts my daughter up, something which is profoundly difficult to do.

There just aren't enough of these, nowadays.

When I was a young'un, I think I wondered what sorts of shows there might be when I had kids of my own. Nowadays I wonder if, when I have kids of my own, it might just be better for them to watch the stuff my generation saw when it was new, because contemporary television animation is almost universally of shockingly low quality (with exceptions like the current My Little Pony series) with no redeeming values whatsoever. :(

I mean, in my day, we got epic world-building and fleshed-out histories, and nowadays it's all unprofessional scribbles behaving crudely.

Modern cartoons generally annoy me, they've made a conscious decision to have every character constantly moving in some way, it's most noticeable in CGI kids films, the Madagascar penguins being probably the worst culprits. It was probably introduced to combat the perceived shorter attention span of kids due to computer games, and once you're aware of it it really irritates you.

Time for an underated classic: Duckman!

+1. Not to mention bonus points for outright weirdness. I haven't watched Duckman for ages, though, I'm going to have to!
+2 Thank god Frank Zappa got to make that cartoon. If memory serves he had a hell of a time shopping that around the networks.

Speaking of ducks Darkwing Duck was an excellent carton when I was younger.

The thing that has pushed me over the edge (just as soon as I find some free time) was someone talking about a recent episode with a character who is Q. In every way. The personality, the voice, everything apparently, this character is a pony version of Q, and I want to see that and hope that I haven't been lied to.

:D

I was going to say something witty, but I've got nothing. Just :D

"I am Weasel" (AKA I. M. Weasel) was frequently very funny.

Ren & Stimpy is legendary, but who recalls the subversive Ranger Smith cartoons that Spumco did? Or "The Ripping Friends" - it got a full release on DVD in Australia only (glad I snapped it up at the time), some episodes are so edgy and risque they have to be seen to be believed, the "Ripping Time!" segments that end each episode are hilarious, especially one where they seek out the reason why free gifts in cereal boxes are no fun anymore.

Speaking of risque, a lot of cartoons got away with murder - I remember an episode of EEK! The Cat in which they visit a theme park, and one of the attractions is a "shaven weasel petting zoo"!
