It is the logical way to do it, don't know why they resist. Warranty and sell parts only, you break it you bought it on the video cable, assembly is extra with a slight discount for a complete kit.
The lcd/speaker cable would be covered in copper tape so it should be less likely to break. And Yes, I know what date that was posted. Thanks. I'm fairly sure no devs had said anything against it since then, though squidge (iirc) has stated he thought it was a bad idea.
^ I'm sure Craig mentioned the ribbon issue as reason for not offering self-assembly in one of the Gerald threads. I won't search for it though, as it's not really relevant.
