Of course, after all, DVD is backwards compatible with VHS!

Whatever man...if you can't construct a decent argument just resort to sarcasm, right? What's your point?
right, they arent. So as huxley said, what is your point? No one said every type of media ever made was backwards compatible.

The same here, I need the eye candy. However, $600 price tag that is associated with the BluRay will turn a lot of people off. Most of my friends are gamers and all of them has PS2; I'm the only one who said getting PS3 at launch. Go figure.

I love playstation games too, but the fact is that all the ones i love are made by 3rd parties. Sony has always had a pretty weak 1st (and 2nd to a lesser extent) party library. Sony better hope to get a decent marketshare, because they are nothing without the 3rd party.

I have no trust in Sony's media pushing endeavours. *cough*minidisc*cough*

Actually Minidisc was perfectly good and lasted years. The reason minidisc is now defunct is the same reason portable tapes and CD walkmans are, and that is because of MP3 players. It's just the way of the world, we move on!

Me too.

DVD is really good (and cheap), so why upgrade?
Why upgrade? er possibly because a DVD can only hold a max of 8 gig with dual layered discs. Standard DVD players will be ditched eventually anyway. probably for a player that is multi format, I bet some smart ass will eventually design a system that will read Blue Ray, HD-DVD, DVD and CD etc... Oh yes it's going to be expensive at first, as all new technology is, but the point is, and dare I mention it again folks: The PS3 is a Blue Ray and backwards compatible machine, and that means by default there's going to be millions of blue ray machines out there. Can any of you remember how expensive the first CD players were? And how we laughed when we were told that CDs will replace vinyl. And that happened ever so quick. These days a CD player is as inexpensive as £15 not £300 as they were when they were first released. Stick around a few years and you will see what I mean.

I'm running out of arguments. Erm...

I have two perfectly good television sets. I'm not going to line some company's pockets just to get more detail in exactly the same movie. It's silly.

There, that better?

Hmmm. Let's see <_<

1. Sony want to push Blu-ray
2. Sony own the rights to distribute lots of media

therefore ...
 +1+2=4 = Sony can force you to buy all their media on blu-ray.

There's always some 'early adopters' who will.

Sony got their fingers burned badly with VHS vs Betamax and realized that without the content to bolster sales it doesn't matter which technology is better.
They learned from that and bought themselves a load of content.

Minidisc is the best soundsystem of all the time. It's not dead, only a bit forgotten (but still too expensive) You could buy a PS3 as the same price as a HD-MD :S

Yes :p

Sorry, I probably came across a bit harsh there.

I wouldn't expect anyone to go out and buy a HDTV and a Blu-Ray player, Xbox 360 and Sky HD just to get high def. That would be madness. But when you do eventually need a new TV, it'll make sense to get a HDTV. And when you have a HDTV, Blu-Ray is going to look a lot more attractive.

But I wouldn't buy a PS3 at £425, even if it is cheap for a Blu-Ray player. Wake me when they cost £200.

Agreed, I still have a Minidisc walkman thingy in my handbag for when I'm walking home from work. The sheer quality of the audio is superb. It makes a lot of MP3 players and CD walkman's sound terrible in comparison.

Also, I'm borrowing my boyfriends Minidisc stack system, it's much easier to compile discs, label and edit them with the full remote control :).

That's exactly my view. Though I'd probably wait until HDTVs are about the same price as (smallish) LCDs are now before considering getting one. But I'm perfectly content at the moment. :)

I remember one of the famous Sony sayings was "Sony No Bologna", and I think for the most part that IS correct. IMO their sound systems and TVs are quite good quality. Perhaps they have had their falls in life, but so what? The only Sony device i've had issues with was my 5 year old ps2, which Sony in fact replaced free of charge.

Even the Sony walkman I no longer use on a regular basis has amazing sound quality.

I will buy it when Blu-Ray recorders are released and are at a decent price.
Well Duh, so will we all....

None of us need to buy it in the first place, as it will simply be an introduction to the media market. whether it will become a popular recordable market is another thing.....

Well I think people were saying that they thought it was going to fail - and who would buy a failed piece of equipment!
And: Blu-Ray recorder != Blu-Ray player
