I've just noticed that the main website, openpandora.org, is now wrapped up in the uniform header as shown on these boards...

..Which is good in terms of continuity.

[Has it been like this for long? I don't visit the main official page too often tbh]

But, if this is how it is now, I think the secondary heading of the logo should be removed - the one that reads "OFFICIAL BOARDS"...

...As this is not really relevant to the main website but still shows up there.

Another thing I noticed, and tried in a couple of browsers, is that the YT video that plays on the main page of main site sits in front of the menus, namely the 'Emulation' ones...

...Suspect that can be sorted easy enough with z-index?

example:

o0o39l.png

  • Please change the logo on the side from old-chrome-logo to midori.
That would be both legal and correct, as opposed to now.

  • The first four side-sections are ok, the rest are redundant or not so important. Suggested changes:

Native games and emus should be seperate. I think community should be a single one. How about "Play hard, make work fun."

Linux and foss should be one. I dont think the tux image is so strong on its own, its better to tell how we differ, and why that rocks rather than imply its partly android. Getting support for android is, broken, will not fix. It was "oh shiny" at one point, but not now.

Quality audio should be one.

Made in germany should be one.

The nested FAQ, only mentions that last point in a cost context, that is narrowminded, it also has to do with craftmanship and skilled non child-labour. Nobody in their right mind uses "expensive" in marketing. And its contrary to the point that is made, because its only expensive if you compare it to surveillance devices subsidized with bloat and malware. The whole faq answers nothing that isnt answered elsewhere, (most prominently in the side sections, with mouseovers) and it does it, in usual faq practice, quite badly. FAQ-style can work if it follows a natural progression, but this is rambling not at its finest. In the mindset of any user, it misses the mark, badly.

_Nobody_ complained when _all_ of the countless FAQ pages got taken off the wiki and done properly.

Feel free to use the intro-shtick thats on the wiki. I think that covers with few words alot of the essence, and doesnt so much put into wording what you can see better from the image.

  • The "general information" in the top section is outdated, and replicated on the wiki. The "emulation" is effectivly reimplementing the repo in an unmaintainable way, and does nothing extra for discovering. Add playpandora.com instead. The view new content doesnt work, because it points to new articles, of which there really arent any, since the eki blog does that function now.

  • The order section could be a colour coded map with one colour for each of the 4 shops. France Japan, NA/US and elswhere. Nested menus arent cool.

Im very much in favour of killing the whole page with fire. The only concept that has merit as it is being the video and the image of the pandora. That is great. ogg theora, webM or h.264 is preferable since they are free and flash is plugin. Fallback to something like apng. There was some talk of making a new updated video that better covers things somewhere.

© 2012 OpenPandora Ltd. & OpenPandora GmbH grinds my gears. And i cant stand ipboard. Therefore:

  • Chage to mobile view by default. It scolls better, it looks better.

  • Also kill the old page, its full of dead links, that isnt good for SEO.
How about make the donation panel into a rpg coin and call it donations? And it could show the bar. Doesnt have the nag-factor then, and it is nice and fresh each time you load the page.

the old-chrome-logo to midori.
Midori, the crappy version we have on Pandora? You must be joking.

At least the Firefox logo, or if you really want chrome, chromium blue logo would be the right one to pick because we technically dont have chrome on Pandora.
We have Chrome, you're just confussed because they spelled it Firefox.
Nope, I insist, we only have Chromium :)

Oh i almost forgot, we need a ogg theora h.265 or webM video. Flashcrap is not on.

If there isnt support it could default to an apng or something everyone has support for.

Edit: updated my post above.

I wasnt 100% on the legality of adding just the firefox logo, turns out i was right. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/styleguide/identity/firefox/branding/

Its non-free as per debian guideline and wikipedia policy.

The concept of supporting a smaller brower i really like, their community would really appreciate it. Be it midori, dillo, or other. Or elsewise combinations thereof.
I don't see really which part of the guidelines would stand against using it :

  • alter our logos in any way
  • place a logo in such close proximity to other content that it is indistinguishable -> not the case here
  • make our logo the most distinctive or prominent feature on your website, printed material or other content  -> not the most prominent feature either
  • use our logos in a way that suggests any type of association or partnership with Mozilla or approval, sponsorship or endorsement by Mozilla (unless allowed via a license from us)  -> not used as any kind of endorsement, but that could be ever further clarified by adding a sentence "it runs, for example, firefox" or something like that.
  • use our logos in a way that is harmful, deceptive, obscene or otherwise objectionable to the average person -> N/A
  • use our logos on websites or other places containing content associated with hate speech, pornography, gambling or illegal activities -> N/A
  • use our logos to, or in connection with, content that disparages us or sullies our reputation -> N/A unless you consider the Craig connection :)

It says about not using it without the firefox name next to it. What we do is essentially what they call "co branding" and with it follows "neccessary permissions" The route there would be iceweasel, and then you are back to chromium- why is it not →?  level discussion.

That's why I mentioned we should clarify "Firefox" inside the description there.

I dont think that cuts it, it needs to be that specific logo, no alterations, with their font logotext next to it on the right, or below.

A FF logo and then a list of software names is "next to things that are indistinguishable" It would have to be a seperate one for FF, and with their terms...

Guys, thats all nice and such, but I doubt any of your suggestions will be implemented. This "Frontpage" is all done by Craig and some other guy (can't remember his name, but craig made him mod here) that did the coding. Back then some (or most ?) people around here weren't very happy with it, and suggested a lot of things, but sadly most of these were ignored.

But I guess Ed just decided that even a flawed, new website was still better than the old.

This should not keep you from doing what you did, just wanted to give my two cents.

Well, ED calls the shots, and craig isnt around to whine about it like he did when the site was uploaded.
sure he does, but my (totally uneducated) guess is, that is has a veeeeeeery low priority on his list.

Please dont.

Handheld game console miniature computer.

Open, use it however you like.

No restrictions but freedom. Enjoy,

make and publish software, free of charge.
That is terrible. No restrictions but freedom? Who thought of that?
