Bear with me.

I have emailed Lik-Sang about my order, and as they are holding out until the 'second edition' they won't be shipping anytime soon. It seems that the latest firmware was NOT what they were waiting for, and they'll be waititng EVEN LONGER to order thier units.

The question I'm trying to solve: As some have pointed out, the director of gp32z.com has stated that there will be no 'official release'. Now, I'm confused. Is the "Second Edition", the thing that Lik-Sand is waiting for just another way of saying "official release"? And if so, are they or aren't they going to be making it? And if they aren't, is Lik-Sang recieving pre-orders for a unit that will never arrive?

Lik-Sang had a whole sort of press release page to all the consumers listing off all the problems with the GP2X, the reasons why they aren't buying the units everyone else got. That list is nearly completely fixed due to the new firmwares, and even units being shipped from gbax are pre-equipped with that firmware. I'm getting fed up. If there's no definitive answer about a 'second edition' (I certainly hope they aren't waiting for the "F200" :() then i'm ordering from someone else, and I encourage others to do so as well..

Order from gp32z.com those licksang sucks

Edit: If licksang were a true gp2x supporter they would be like gp32z and gbax and support the first edition.

Unfortunately they arent so blow it off and buy from gp32z or gbax, which will replace ur unit if its fiddled. ^.^

IMO "second edition" is a marketing name made up by Lik-Sang. The problem for Lik-Sang is that they don't want to sell the current units because they fear that they'll end up with too many returns.

But they also fear that they'll lose a lot of customers by waiting. So they've branded the korean official release "second edition" in an attempt to make it sound like something much better than what is sold now. That way some customers will wait in the hopes of getting something that sounds like an upgraded version.

But why is gp32z.com saying that there'll be no official release, you ask? Well, they're right in a way because "second edition" = official release in Korea.

At this point it's not a world wide official release anymore. Because thousands of units have already been shipped and most distributors outside Korea has chosen to continue shipping. So now the "official release" is only the official release for the korean market (and Lik-Sang).

Please note that I'm only guessing most of this. I have some knowledge in marketing but very little facts. Lik-Sang will most likely start shipping units when the GP2X has had an official release in Korea. That time is currently set to sometime in Q1 2006.

Well, I highly agree with Eolair's point of view. (especially 'official release' one)

It seems GPH mentioned 'official release' because of their complaining customers (you guys never imagine how they flame GPH about so many 'little' things <_< )

And i've never heard about 'worldwide official release' or 'second edition'

Thus, I believe the 'official release' is just the term for korean only, and there might be no second edition.

EDIT: this is another guess, also :)

what Drak sez. Screw Lik-Sang, GP32z is just fine if you are in the US or Canada, GBAX if you are in Europe. My first edition model arrived with no problems and the only delay was due to double customs hits.

Well, this is all very confusing, but I guess it's cleared one or two things up- like waiting for an "official" edition is now redundant. Basically, I'm gonna have to wait 'til I come back home at the end of the christmas holidays to order though, because I leave this Thursday, and I don't like the thought of it waiting in a collection depot all week :(. I'll be ordering from gbax.com since I'm in UK ;) Damn, can't wait :p

There's nothing mentioned as 2nd edition or something. If it was, the main distributors would know it. We have no news about it. Upcoming project is XGP and new firmware of Gp2x will be available in early January.

The unit will be very stable after the 4th Firmware. Most of the companies are waiting for this firmware to start shipment. That's why some of them produced a word like "2nd Edition".

I haven't found out a fatal error on devices so far. If anyone find it please share it with us.

Do not wait for 2nd Edition :)

Have a nice day...

What about the Play-Asia announcement :
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-17-74-z5-47-foot.html

Improved Gamepark GP2X Version in stock !
[...]
Hardware fixes have been made as well:
* Picture trembling has generally been improved (not noticable anymore)
* Improved darker pictures by changing electric resistance of LCD driver
So it seems hardware modifications have been made in latest batches ?

Let's have a look at it:
"Picture trembling has generally been improved (not noticable anymore)
Improved darker pictures by changing electric resistance of LCD driver."

These are known issues that can be solved with CPU-LCD Tweaker software. It's not a hardware change.

Users suffer from this problem (not a real problem actually) can download the software from the download section.

Only a software modification which will be available to all units with 4th firmware.

In the 4th editon firmware user can change the brightness of the LCD screen.

I hope it is clear.

The fact this may be corrected by software does not mean they did not actually made some hardware improvement. If they claim they changed an electric resistance, there has been a hardware change, no ? Now we need to know from where play-asia had that info indeed, but I guess they did not invent it. Someone at GPH must have told them. It does not mean this is a "second edition". But hardware revisions are common between batches in electronic devices.

We are doing business with GPH. So I can easily ask this. Till now we are not informed such a hardware change. But i'll double check it tomorrow and let you know about it.

All I tried to explain that the device bought earlier is not defective and people who will buy the device later will not have a better device. All products are same and change "electric resistance" is not a hardware change. It can be adjusted by controller chips.

Thanks.

Sure, I did not say the contrary, but as I wrote, hardware revisions are very common, so the play-asia announcement did not come as a surprise (despite manufacturers usually do not communicate about this to avoid stocking "older" versions).

Really ? That's surprising.

Thank you for checking with GPH anyway.

The latest batches that have been sent out ARE already "Second Edition" (or, "No Edition", as simply the "First Edition" is not printed on it and fw1.0.1 is preinstalled)

Hmm Play-Asia allready deleted the GP2x from their site. They had some ads for it a while ago spreaded through the web and now they quit? Well I guess they are too waiting for the official release, they still have a section called "gp2x, gp32" there...

Mine still was "First Edition". Ta!

Got a lollipop too. :)

Is there a comprehensive "check-list" around, the best way to install the screenprotector, way to check for possible faults?

What are you talking about? I got a mail from Play-Asia only yesterday saying that they now have it in stock. See for yourself: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-d1-15-gp2x-70-uq6.html
