GP2X Any Developers Interested In A Game Project?

BigTrouble77 - artwork and game direction/story
me - engine coding (minlib)(In around a week or so I should have time to do some work on this. Blame my coursework.)
Dimacus - engine coding (SDL)
FluffyPanda - coding
Karurosu - scripting engine

Goals: To create an AdventureRPG game/engine.

Deadlines: erm... we don't have a date set, but we want to have a nice prrof of concept put together.

Needed Positions: A sound guy would be handy... as would more active coders.

The more the merrier, basically. I hope GP2X Forge coes back up though, so I can set any needed permissions if you do want to help out..

@Dimacus: I'll try that out right now! I have a minute to spare... lol.

EDIT: forgot a staffer >_>

Well, i think we need more people on making art and story writers.
I recall mrpham said he could do music/sounds.

But, as I stated earlyer i think we need more people on everything, you what they say; the more the merrier :p

And i think the basic story line as of now is something like this:
You are the assistant of some doctor exavating some old ruins in the dessert.
Earlyer you had met a gang of "evil looking person".
You wake up to find that the proffessor is gone, and he have left a note saying he could not contain his excitment for something he found inside the ruins, so now that you woke up, you go after him.

now im not any position to decide or anything, but i think we are peritty open to just about anything.

I would love to help work on story and overall "feel" of the game if you need it. I'm not very good at drawing, I'm new to coding and you already have a lot of coders, and I'm not very good at music/sound.

If you want to code, you are welcome to.

The story side of things, you'll have to discuss with BigTrouble77, really.

@Dimacus: Can you please email your engine and code, since I can't seem to get it from your FTP....
(pokeparadox AT gmail DOT com)

GP2xForge should be back up; my IP was changed while I was on vacation, so that's why you couldn't reach it.

All fixed now though.

It's not that I don't want to code, but that I probably can't code well enough. I have no real experience coding except a couple tutorials and my "Extraterrestres" game, which is very basic. I would, however, like to look at the code to learn from it.

BigTrouble77: could you explain your story ideas to me?

Also,
Where/when can we all have development meetings? I think that having a chat room meeting once a month (or even once a week) would work much better than only talking on the forums, because it gets things done much quicker because everyone is there at the same time.

Well the code can be checked out from the SVN server. There are currently 2 versions SDL and Ryleh's minimal lib. I started things off with the minimal lib version, but haven't been able to work on it for a while.
Don't worry about being experienced.... just dive in and learn! :)

Where can we meet for discussions?

My new site (it's not finished, but again need time to work on it >_>) has a chat facility. Also all my IMprogram details are in my forum profile, so if you need to get hold of me, it shouldn't be too difficult.

I may end up totally screwing up whatever parts I attempt to do . . . I can usually get to where I want to in the end, but my code is generally very messy and slow.

Anyways, do you have a list of things that need to be done? I would love to help out, but I don't know where to start.

Hm.. If you're stuck for anything or need help, ask me. However, I cannot code in C++ or SDL as of yet.

I'm not so organised atm, sorry. I have been busy. And free time is only recently becoming available again. When I last did some code on this I was the sole active coder. :)

Your first stop might be to checkout the sources from the SVN.

It seems Dimacus has come some way in a tile-map loader based in SDL, so it I'm unsure if my code will as useful now.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I don't mind explaining about coding in C++. I'm not saying I'm a super wizard or anything... I'm still learning. But I fairly profficient. So yeah you can contect me if you need some help/advice on this stuff.

Well, I recently switched over to linux (ubuntu!) and I don't have my gp2x development stuff setup yet . . . I was using devc++ in windows, is there something similar to that (a nice gui) in linux? I have anjuta and eclipse, but I haven't really tried them out, which is better? (or should I get a different one entirely?) Also, how would I go about setting that up for linux? (there are multiple ways disussed on the wiki, what are the differences?)

EDIT: when I tried the script on the archive, it ran for quite some time and then it gave me some errors and ended by saying "Error building glibc" . . .

Haha .. I'm sorry to say you have caught me on something I'm not too hot with... Linux. I can hack about in the bash prompt a bit but that's about as far I have got on that side of things.
That being said, I have used Eclipse (for Java coding) and it seems quite nice in some respects.

deadlychicken: I've tried a few IDEs in Linux and so far my favourite has been Codeblocks. Eclipse is nice but kind of a pain to set up for C/C++. Anjuta is ok too, but I didn't really like it as much as Codeblocks.

KDevelop is pretty sweet, but you probably don't want to run all the KDE libraries on ubuntu just for that.

Then again, if you haven't tried KDE I heartilly recommend it, it's far more powerful and customisable than gnome. I believe that you can switch Ubuntu over to Kubuntu with a couple of apt packages in synaptic.

I actually installed kubuntu-desktop on top of my ubuntu install, and I tried it out for awhile, but I really don't like it as much. It has a lot of high quality programs that gnome is lacking, but I really like the simplicity of gnome, having switched over from windows.

I still have kde installed, but I never boot into it, and trying to use its programs under gnome causes problems.

Yeah, KDE is more for the power users out there. Gnome looks really quite sweet now, but I always get slightly frustrated by it and revert back to KDE.

The one thing I have found is that the current Kubuntu distro doesn't always make a lot of sense. For example, it has the KDE control center in the menu, but if you try to use it you find that half of the options are off the bottom of a window which doesn't scroll and can't be resized any bigger than your monitor resolution. You need to use the settings button on the taskbar instead - same windows but this time they resize and space the widgets properly.

I'm currently waiting for the release of SuSE 10.1 so I can upgrade my laptop from 9.3 that I'm using now. SuSE has been a dream to work with since 9.0

anyways, what is the recommended way to get a gp2x dev environment setup in linux? when I tried the script on the archive, it ran for quite some time and then it gave me some errors and ended by saying "Error building glibc" . . .

I used the script.

In Ubuntu you can't just run it with sudo though, you'll lose your path information. There was a howto posted on these boards somewhere. You basically need to chown a certain directory, but I can't remember which one.

I'll see if I can find the topic.

Edit: Can't seem to find the topic. If you post your error messages here I should be able to remember what I had to do.

Ok i'm gonna look like an idiot and post again :p

Ok i have messed a little with the svn now and the latest version of the source and binary can be found there.
I have also done a little cleaning and structuring so the builds are located under 'http://gp2xforge.rix0r.nl/svn/adrpg/Builds-SDL/' and source 'http://gp2xforge.rix0r.nl/svn/adrpg/Source/'

Comment's on the new version as well as any help on why either the background tiles or object's "jump" a bit when you walk.

in this update there is also a pathetic attempt at collision detection (which works, aslong as you don't try to walk into a second object while standing next to the first object) but i'll probably try to fix that later today.

Also, maybe someone should begin to look at something like a Main menu?
