I've never owned a PSP but I've testet the first PSP at the Games Convention. The Analog-Pad was at the completely wrong place and to small for my taste. The grip was poor if I remember correctly. All in all it could be good for little PSP kiddies but useless for my big Hands. That's why I liked the bigger Pandora nubs.
Sorry to post again, but in reply/question: You make reference to their position, of course that would be different on the Pandora. As to the size, that can be corrected through the various pads available.

The questions are: Do they respond properly? What is their range? Are the new ones free of the issues of the originals?

The answers to the above are paramount to the possibility of using them for the Pandora. I certainly don't have the answers. I don't expect you to have the answers, but they are possible replacements, and I hope we can find out how viable they are.

Cheers,

My Phat PSP (one of the first editions) analog never gave me any problems and has a travel radius of about 2mm. I'd say go with off-the-shelf PSP-replacement nubs because of their distance and just get the caps custom-made since that's probably a lot easier, cheaper and faster to do (since it's only plastic, or rubber) than coming up with designs and people to produce a completely custom one.

what if we up the price of the pandora a little and offer the old company more money pet analog nub? one dollar more each? that'd give them some pretty sweet profits!

The company who made the old nubs will not make them, we even offered to buy 100,000 in one bulk order. They have said no matter what they won't do it.

The minimal cost for making a custom nub is $25,000.

So yes, if you can find an off the shelf 2mm nub it would be very very helpful right now ;)

That sucks. $25,000/2 = $12,500/3000 = 4.something $ per pandora per nub (why did I divide that by two again?)

plus the time it would take making them = sad smiley face.

I too will go search for some 2+ mm radius nubs now

Me neither, but it's not just that. Consider that the team will have to pay the money before getting it back. Plus delays would cause the loss of some potential customers

Raise the price a little. $5 - $10. People who really were going to pay $330 will pay $340 too.

Do it right. That was the whole point of Pandora afterall, to finally do a device like this the way it should be done, by hobbyists for hobbyists. So I think it's worth a little extra waiting and slightly higher price.

ALSO - it's not at all a bad idea for people to scour the net for possible existing nubs, especially Chinese reading users, since that would likely be the source language if there's a factory out there making 2mm analog nubs out there. Internet nerd power - use it! :p

Yea, I remember back in the Our New Machine topic when we voted for the OMAP chip, many of us, including me, agreed to paying up to $400. ;)

Any other specifications besides, "2mm nub"?

What's the point 'doing it right' if it never gets released?

Spring has turned into Autumn, which will turn into the New Year at this rate. By which point, lots of us will have gone for something else.

All because we've all come down with a serious case of DaveC disease.

One search strategy would be to investigate all the various MIDs, media devices and gaming enabled phones out there. See if any have analog nubs with 2mm travel (or thereabout) and locate the production source.

However, DaveC was right.

No one read my post saying the PSP one has a 2mm travel? :p

That basically means that a non-Sony replacement one would work OK (plus custom cap), unless of course that's patented or something, who knows, since the patent system is so screwed up.

edit: about the stick click: yeah, the PSP ones don't have click. Maybe it could be hacked in there somehow though? :p

It needs Stick Click.

Hey, as far as controls are concerned, DaveC is one of the best people to listen to. I trust his opinions about that.

I read your post.

First, I would be very surprised if it wasn't patented.

Second, I've used that nub and I can't STAND it. It's better than the launch nub, but not by much. We need to distance ourselves from PSP nubs, IMHO.

This turned up after a quick google, but seems inadequate and the manufacturer would have to be identified. People with more time are bound to have better results.

On a totally unrelated note, a bounty for the one that finds the perfect nub would be quite motivating. Like something for free.

Maybe the company that makes the PSP nubs (or the replacements) also has a standard nub that can be sold for other products?

I found a hinge and it turns out it is the same company that makes the hinges for the DS. While you can't buy the exact DS hinge, you can buy ones that are similar. Maybe it is the same with the nubs?

If we had to sacrafice the stick click for one with more travel I don't think it would be the end of the world. After all we have a whole keyboard right next to it to use.

I'm not so sure we would want a nub similar in design to a PSP nub tho' Like I said, they aren't that good. Now if we could take that 1mm travel one and increase the travel, that'd probably be decent.

And Don't you remember? Stick click is how we quieted down all of those PSX-fanboys bitching about 4 shoulder buttons. Also, Stick click gives you 2 extra buttons that are a helluva lot easier to reach than the keyboard buttons.

yeah the click thing would be nice, The PSP nubs do get dirty easily, on both the phat and the slim. It would be a solution, but not one that I would want...
