Accessing Gp2x Through Usb

Um...it's kinda complicated. There was a guide somewhere to setting up the drivers for the gp2x to be reconized as a "linux rndis gadget" or something. After that, the ip would have to be set...but in the end

Oh, here. http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showt...7848&hl=gp2x+ip

and get the linux.inf and crap here http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,15,1290
Thanks a lot. I'll be sure to check this out as soon as I have some time.

Well - how fun he he. We're careful with money and I spent my "allowance" on the card - ain't got no plan for something more like a $30 reader. Humm.

That should REALLY be reflected in the Wiki - it's misleading. I'm not changing anything until my card arrives and I can test it.

Interesting, all the times I ever read the wiki it stated that a card reader is nearly a must, but then I never read the introduction pages anymore lately.

I don't know about $30, maybe $12 retail, $8 to $10 on ebay or newegg (link to search: "SD" and Card Readerscategory). I would ask ED to see what he suggests, maybe he knows of a cheap SD reader that will do it.

I wish I had a GP2X so I could "Beta" all of this stuff for peeps on here that need help, maybe I'll have one soon :).

AFAIK the GP2X shouldn't be used as a reader, but I think that setting up Samba and sharing the SD card in the utilities will do the trick. The Mini-USB on the side can be used for cool stuff like Networking to a PC and such, but as a card reader anything I have ever used sucks (I count all digital cameras I have used in that as well), a Bus-Powered actual Reader is always better than a device that needs to "emulate" a card reader in software.

I wouldn't just go formating the card the wrong size, if anything see if you can move the included game demos onto the SD in the GP2X using the file manager program built in. Then you will know the SD works, so go to utilities and follow the instructions in the thread in the post above, set up Samba and you will see your PC set up a "USB Network Device" then in your Settings make sure SD is selected, it should show up in your "Network Neighborhood" and you can drag and drop into it. That is what I would try first, I think that it is using a different driver ("USB network", instead of "USB card reader") and may work better.

By the way, is it ok to boot the GP2X with an unformatted card using firmware 2.0? Or should I stay on the safe side and only insert it after I turn it on?

I don't get it?
Is this a Windows thing? 'cause I just put a brand new card in and started right away. Should I have formatted the disk manually thorugh MacOSx? Because I wasn't ever promtped to do so.

Yes.

It seems that if the very first thing you do is try and use your GP2X as a card reader with windows (XP generally), that the GP2X is showing windows a corrupted SD, although a real Card reader with windows and the GP2X have no problems reading the card seperately.

If you just use a card reader you likely will never experience this.

Um, the Wiki says this:
This page lists the make and size of SD cards that users have attempted to use with the GP2X.
Contents
* 1 Cards known to be compatible
* 2 Cards that work, but not for firmware update
* 3 Cards known to be incompatible
* 4 Other notes
Cards known to be compatible
* A-Data MyFlash 2GB 50X
* A-Data MyFlash 2GB 60X
* A-Data MyFlash Turbo SD 2GB 150X
* A-Data MyFlash Turbo SD 4GB 150X (tested on firmware 1.4)
So, at least on that page, it doesn't say much about a card reader. However, I agree that almost everyone I've read talking about SD cards mentions they have a card reader, now that I think about it. It's just neither "on the GP2X box" nor obvious from other documentation. Welcome to the usability hole that is our community.

I tried this card - on the GP2X via USB link Windows XP will format it to <1gig, which I didn't opt for. Using my built-in SD card reader in my 2 year-old Toshiba M200 Tablet PC it can't format it at all. So... SD card reader - here I come.

Say, Nube... I'm going to catch some Deadwood tonight, thought I might try out my GP2X's video playback - I saw Art's options for using the EXT storage, so that's neat. Break-out-Box will be fun.

At least I'm not spending $50 a pop per game, eh?

My 2c, I have been using my 1GB SD card that was fromatted by my digital camers. I have no reader yet. The GP reads and writes fine to the card, but it is SLOW as hell.

**No one** can make me believe that the GP2X has a 2.0 USB, when it takes 10 minues to move 50MB of data, it's ridiculous.

Yeah, I didn't know he was still selling those, thought he quit. As you can see he is just soldering a USB hub onto an EXT cable. I would use a neat "flat" slim USB hub and make my own, has to be cheaper, right? (not even getting into the whole Dollars to Pounds and international shippind thing). If it has a circuit for terminating the signals all you need to do is solder 3 wires (I won't tell you which three again, *hint* a link to the answer is somewhere in this post :)).

DO NOT USE the GP2X as an "SD READER", windows will tell you it needs a format, IT IS NOT TRUE.

You CAN use the GP2X as a Network Drive on a USB Network device, choose those options in settings, the SD card will show up as a network drive in windows.

The GP2X emulates a USB HDD in windows, unfortunately windows expects HDD (Hard Disk Drives) to have a partition, most flash media (including Flash sticks) is formatted without a partition like a giant floppy disk.

Windows thinks the drive is corrupt because it is in "USB HDD" mode instead of "USB Card Reader" mode.

Just use the Samba server and the SD should show up as a Network Neighborhood (My Network Places in XP) Shared folder, drag and drop from there.

Bad drivers, It is a USB 2.0 chip:
GP2X wiki page on the NetChip 2272
NetChip's Product page

I never get as good results with anything that must remain powered and be in "transfer mode" as I do with a $10 USB 2.0 reader, that includes digital cameras.

What speed is your SD card? I found mine was slow because it was a base Sandisk 1GB and it was just a plain slow card.

When you say "bad drivers", do you mean drivers on the GP2X or on my system? Because I have had no trouble with USB2 speeds on any of my other devices. I don't know the speed on the card, but I use it via my digital camera and get great throughput, moving 1GB of data takes minutes not hours. I have switched to a SD reader now, and newer 2GB cards.

Ooh, I forgot to post an update of my situation here though I did it in another thread. For me it's the same as David, I borrowed my dad's Lexar card reader and it did the trick. Also didn't try the network thing, since it's so complicated and all. Maybe I'll do it if I have some time later.

Just get a card reader, it takes me 3 minutes to transfer a gig.
It appears as though the speed is limited to the SD card. USB 2.0 can handle around 50 megabytes (480 megabits) a second, so if a card can read 22.5 megabytes a second and handle writing a few megs less per second, that'd make sense.

I use a PCMCIA reader..and have for years.

For shits and gigles, I tried this USB connect through the GP2X to access the SD.

Has anyone else had this happen?:

I plug in the USB tot he front port of my Mac G5. Hit the connect thru the GP2X. It works.
fine.

I try it again later.

The Mac pauses, then freezes entrely. I have to reboot hard...now I can't ever connect again in this method.
(no big deal, as I'd rather use the card reader, but I was curious if anyone has had this happen and what exactly is going on? .. is it the USB2 thing? I tried is again on the keyboard, .. nothing.)

EDIT: I just tried it on my old 550 mhz G4 Powerbook -- it works fine...the SD mounts through GP2X usb....what's up with the G5 working once?
