A Teaser Pic

Looks like the prototype is the same thickness as the final hardware. I want it smaller. Maybe a GPX2 micro?

Can't.

If you see closely, it's not the GPX2 itself being thick, but it's the AA battery that thickens the machine. Other than the battery area, everything looks generally very slick.

As long as they use AA batteries instead of internal ones, they won't get any thinner than that.

You should feel the machine to be very thin if you hold your hand around the battery area I think.

I know what you mean, but the whole unit looks thick. I like to stick it in my pocket and take it to work, don't want a bulge. ;) I'll just take a dremel to it and remove the battery area, and stick a Nintendo DS battery in it.

Thin units aren't as comfortable to play though. The GP32 is very comfortable to play and alot of that is due to it's thickness. Ever notice that game controllers for Xbox, PS2 etc aren't razor thin? I had a zodiac which was thin but very uncomfortable to play. I will take playability over thin cross section anyday.

They could use AAA's for slightly thinner unit... :p

I used to have one of these,

connected to one of these:

Direct wires... :p And duck-tape.

Dunno what kind of voltage it ran on, but it worked, and was very comfy, even for 6 years olds hands...

Well, Green House, the Game&Watch I still own, is 3volts... That battery outputs 4.5...

...I just had to quote this. :D

I personally don't mind the size at all. I always carry around a small bag that can fit in things like cell phones or handheld quite nicely. Even some things as small as cell phones give me uncomfortable feeling when I put them in my pocket anyway. :D.

Also I'm with Davec on this one for certain amount of thickness for comfortability. GP32 has a nice grip to it because of that and the round extruded bulge, though we won't see the round bulge returning for GPX2 due to the design decision... Kinda makes me sad on that part.

Jarska: Whoa that battery looks funky. :D

Yes, ignore pics of the grey GP - they are old and the design has changed to the white one, the white one is final - apart from its being made in black :)

I think it looks ace. As for the Joystick and it's slipperyness, If only they gave it the rubbery top like PS2 pads - that would be awesome (damn, i'm English I shouldn't be using words like awesome)

How much are SD cards I wonder?

Miner49er - C'mon say "Awesome" again You know you want to! and stop using "U" in words like Catalogue and Colour! :p

I believe newegg.com sells Rosewill 1gb SD cards for like 50 bucks (US), there was a post in the "why should be buy" thread on the first page.

yeah, heart & sould haha :D
but the design is SO nice! grey/silver would be best!!!!! white looks good, too.

how long until the videos, craig?
may have to stay up all night and skip homework for them :p

yeah, SD cards are nice and cheap :)

I don't like design.
I like GP32 design :-(

But the truely important is the heart & soul :)

I'm surprised at that, I'm not saying your wrong. I just wonder why you would say that.

1GB is only $50. 2GB are dropping fast as well.

Im sure the way I hold it I will hit the volume and start buttons the entire time. Also the joystick sticks out, ie its curved towards you. I hate controllers like that ie my Dreamcast ones, so uncomfortable and you slide off them etc. The ones on my Xbox where the curve goes away from you so your thumb sits in it are infinitely better and this fact alone would probably stop me buying one. Unless you can change them of course :)

That was my perosnla peeve with the design - the stick shoud've had a concave thumbpad. Like the NGPC and GP32 have.

Hopefully it's either:

1) Better than it looks in pics

2) Easily removed and switchable with ones we like better

3) Easy to make concave with a dremel tool as a last resort

No design is ever perfect, but GPX2 is damn good compared to other handhelds out there.

Or you could always just grind a little bit of texture into the stick. I remember my first Dual shock controller didnt have the rubberized top and after a couple of years of use I'd worn it slick so I pulled out a bastard fill and roughed it up a bit.

It seems like a small thing but I do agree it should have been concave. I think dremel tool may be the answer here. Or another idea is to get a large polished ball bearing say 1" in diameter, heat it with a torch and then mush down the stick on it melting a nice smooth concave in it. Then trim off any excess plastic that may have mushed out.

It is too bad companies like this couldn't show a preliminary design, take criticism and then make changes and make final. Stuff like this and the poor volume button placement could have been corrected.

Oh c'mon dave, you're not atleast a little happy that you might be able to get your vertical screen emu's thanks to those poorly placed volume buttons?

UGH, I do NOT like the start and select button placement. I wish they would move the volume. I like knowing how far I have turned up the volume anyways, like with the GP32's wheel volume.
