3D Printing

seen the price of theses machines, except if you want to invest lots of times and produce a massive amount of item, I've only 1 thing to say.... Shapeways...

Move to a city that has a decent hackerspace. Seriously! Metalab here in Vienna has a plethora of printing-lasering-cutting-thingies ..

Nice build project, though when the plans for this print are on TPB I see it being a popular d/l for less scrupulous characters

I had a sudden bone chilling fear that someone will read this and attempt to use it as a lever to restrict 3D printing. We could be looking at a future where you can't legally print a new part for your car because someone could print a gun.

like anyone who wanted to print a gun for illegal reasons would care if it was illegal to do so.

agreed, seems like it would be hard to regulate though. I guess they'd try to control the programs and try to stop the sharing of "restricted" models? Use it as a big excuse to sensor the internet, probably.

If these things can make weapons, you know they'll do everything they can to stop it. Especially in countries where owning any gun is illegal, dictatorships, etc...

Wow, what's with all these expensive kits?? $1200 is already too much for me (but hey, I'm a student with no fixed income ..)

The coming year I want to save up for a Rostock Delta bot:

It has fewer parts than the Prusa Mendel and should be a few $100 cheaper as well.

I like how each of the 3 "axes" is basically the same, so it's easier te service (same parts).

Further more: the printing-area is fixed/stable and the printing-head is lighter due to the 'bowden cable' type feeder.
