This is yet another typical PR disaster from the master of such things, in my opinion ..

Some people ordered back when OpenPandora were loudly proclaiming that test boards were running at 800MHz or more, that 900MHz ought to be quite possible. Forum members generally ran with what they were being told on here and some even got excited enough to accidentally raise the number to 1GHz IIRC. Wow - think of this, a 1GHz rocket in your pocket!
So while YOUR expectation may have only been for 600MHz, other people who'd been shown 800MHz and told more was possible paid over a year before that overclocking fiasco thread. Even so it's unclear whether Craig was being serious or facetious in that thread, which makes it a fairly dangerous thread to quote in seriousness.
Since forum goers were getting excited about 800MHz plus, despite having ordered 600MHz plus (that plus is important!), some die-hard killjoys (such as, IIRC, WizardStan and myself) have been known to throw in the odd "you can't COUNT on it doing over 600MHz. Yes, they promise 600MHz PLUS but you can't COUNT on 720, or 800 - honest, they don't guarantee it!. That does not stop people treating OpenPandora's OpenBragging about the speed as an incentive to buy. Yes, it goes to AT LEAST 600MHz. You didn't expect the extra speed tha tOpenPandora showed us years ago. That's good for you. Some other people, who have seen the numbers quoted on the boards time and again really do expect to get what they've been told/sold. Reducing their chance of getting it IS like cherry picking the winning lottery tickets and selling only "no win" tickets. Or rather, it would be if OpenPandora ever seriously considered doing that.
People feeling let down result in sad, unhappy posts. People berating them for wanting what they've been told they are buying on the basis that "I don't want/need/expect that" make for sad and angry THREADS. That doesn't FEEL productive, to me, personally.

I ordered in October 2008 and have been following the project (albeit casually sometimes) the whole time. I recall Craig saying it could easily handle Doom 3 with a proper port and I remember hearing about the various possibilities of overclocking. To be perfectly honest I was always skeptical and didn't really expect that to be a real-world result. I was seriously asking why people were so upset and hadn't considered this point of view so I do appreciate your reply. Thanks

But if that is the case, the sort of overclocks that we were originally seeing is probably the exception, where they used to be the norm.

To be fair to Craig I don't think he ever said it could easily handle Doom 3. I think he said Doom 3 was probably about the limit of the hardware.
Actually, it's the other way around. Rev1's were the slowest technically. Rev2 and later do on average 750MHz at OPP3 but we've never tested OPP5 because my old kernel panics at the UART init due to some changes somewhere and we have never had the voltage scaling in the kernels since. I'm not going to speculate on what OPP5 will do on the newer chips but my fingers are *unofficially* crossed.

Some people believe everything that OpenPandora say about the Pandora, which is an exercise in making room for contradictions. I prefer the multiple-universe explanation myself... but yes, even now you'll see people suggesting that most if not all Pandoras will go to 800MHz mostly via a combination of faith and hope. Powerful allies, faith and hope. That so many will run to or beyond 800MHz is even used as one of the arguments to not get upset about the possiblity of cherry-picking the Special Edition units.
How will they be picked? Sadly, we don't know yet - and may never do. OpenPandora aren't being very open about that, as yet. This is probably rattling those who have lost some of that "faith and hope" I mentioned earlier
