    Battery Drain

I concur with WizardStan, the PowerPax heat issue sounds like a voltage problem (i.e. it provides more than 5V, possibly much more). I would get it checked with a voltmeter, and, if possible, a scope to check if the voltage is clean. (I checked a bunch of chargers before I connected anything to...

    USB GPS Receivers

Whenever this comes up I reply as follows: "Go for a BlueTooth GPS, there's not much point in using a cumbersome USB GPS". Specifically, find a BT GPS receiver based on either the MTK chipset or the Sirf Star III chipset. They'll serve you well, have good battery time, and work with any other...

    Hardware compatibility list

Yeah, wi-fi dongles could be a problem. But there are some that work in the mainline kernel (built-in drivers in Linux), some of them should work on Pandora as well. (For x86 it's a bit different, because just about every wi-fi dongle can usually work through ndiswrapper when there's no Linux...

    Midi files??

One reason would be if you have a codec for MP3 which runs in the DSP, while your Ogg Vorbis codec runs only in the CPU. The load and battery consumption difference is quite significant. That's why I don't run Ogg Vorbis on my N800, it's simply unfeasible due to battery life and CPU load...

    Hardware compatibility list

In any case, most USB stuff should work, and just about anything bluetooth should work too, unless it's some unusual special gadget. (The most tricky one seems to be ad2p profile, i.e. stereo sound. But IIRC this works already).

Wonder if pandora can have phone capability

Even though you can easily get 3G capabilities by hooking up a USB 3G modem, I don't think you can get voice (normal phone) over that. But why not just use voiceIP instead, there should be several options available eventually. To make a new hardware version of the Pandora with a built-in...

How to unsubscribe from Craig's spam?

I've only ever received a single newsletter from Craigix since August 2008 (which is when I hit the 'subscribe to newsletter' button), and that was the newsletter the other day. It fails to meet my criteria of spam. I could use a bit more actually, e.g. a letter telling me my place in the...

    Does pandora have a rtc

I agree with your assessment. Not just the phones, the Nokia N800 internet tablet can also boot itself up at an alarm. The kernel isn't running. It needs the kernel running if it wants to charge, but not for alarms. I'm not certain if the N900 can also boot at an alarm, but my guess is "yes"...

    SD Cards and speed

Could be, I don't know -- haven't heard about the practice, but it's a possibility for sure.

    SD Cards and speed

Don't forget that there aren't as many SD vendors as there are SD sellers (I keep having to repeat this every few weeks on the boards). There used to be only 3 SD card vendors in the world (Sandisk, Panasonic, Toshiba), there are now possibly 4, but all the rest are rebranding.

    Battery Drain

It's not at 100% when it reaches 100% initially, no. The reason is that the percentage is measured as a percentage of what's defined to be 100% voltage when not charging. To use a device I own as a reference, that could be, say, 4.20 volts. So, if the battery is at 4.20 volts when not connected...

    Battery Drain

If everything else is as it should then a quick initial drain down from 100% would normally be simply because it wasn't fully charged when removed from the charger (as mentioned earlier it'll go to 100% during charging quite quickly, but will still need time to complete the charging. If there's...

    Battery Drain

I think it would be a good idea to have a clear indication that the battery is fully charged. Aren't the LEDs capable of changing colour? The Nokia N900 charges with a slowly blinking yellow light, when finished it changes to stable green (which switches off when you remove the charger cable).

DO NOT have Your Pandora yet? Tell Us Your Order Date!

It won't let me vote. Some error occured. EDIT: Managed to vote now (it was that you had to hit 'N/A' on all the others too). But there's not many that voted so it doesn't seem to be very useful yet.

    SD Cards and speed

My own purely ad-hoc rule-of-thumb is: Get a class 6 card if you can get a good deal on it, if it's too expensive get a class 4 card. Faster than class 6 should only matter if you plan to put it into your PC to write large amounts of data to it.

    android on pandora

Sigh. I for one can't find any condescending tone anywhere in Christoph.Krn's posting. I believe you're reading something into it which is simply not there. and Posting something on a board _is_ implicitly asking about anyone's opinion, the way I see it. Anyway, I'll stay out of this I think.

    Battery Drain

li-ion batteries are not fully charged just because it reads 100% while charging. 100% just means that it's reached whatever voltage defined as 100%, for example 4.20 volts. To fully charge it you need to continue charging it with, say, 4.24 volts until it reaches _that_ voltage and the charging...

    Cortex A15 - 5x faster.

Well, at work we definitely buy desktops, but more than that, we buy servers. In great numbers (relative to the size of our company). And some of our customers are buying servers in even greater numbers, they fill up rack after rack with blades and clusters and whatnot. There's a hunger for more...

    Pandora news on TheRegister

Well, inside it's quite similar (not layout-wise, but components/functional-wise) to a Beagleboard. In any case I for one purchased the Pandora as a general portable computer, not an emulation device. It's a replacement for the conceptually very similar Nokia N800. What the Panda has in...

    Pandora news on TheRegister

Unfortunately you're right in your last paragraph. But still, I can't see how "emulation capabilities" could be a target here, because the Pandora doesn't have specific, specially-made emulation capabilities. They're all covered just by being a general computer, that's the definition of a...
