I think the answer is "No", but is October still possible?
For prototype users? Seems fairly likely to me even with my pessimistic hat on. For the rest of us though, I'd say the answer in no.

As a UKer I was tempted to finish paying off the unpaid part of my deposit, but then of course our dear PM had to open his fat mouth, and so it's not looking a good time to pay off Euro payments just now.

I look the question to be 'is October still possible?'

I think October will happen, it is on my calendar anyway. I don't think that we can skip it. Trying to do so would make the Y2K scramble look like learning to smile.

As to the Pyra - I think the Prototypes will be out soon-ish. The rest will be later-ish. But, like October, I'm pretty sure it is going to happen.

For the overly literal people - the above reference to, "October will happen," is meant in humor as a linguistic twist. I have no idea of, "When will I/you get my/our Pyras."

Being that you were being overly literal, I don't think it's the overly literal people you need to explain that to. ;)

The Sample from the PC Black V0 came just now .The only thing left are the samples from the colors from Plastika S.A. to arrive too but that will happen as i sayed early of september. When that happens i allready scedual to do the job on Saturday since there are some newCommers here that need to be teached. This Matterial might be a solution for discoloration .We will see....

Wow! Made in Japan?

I did some transparent cases with color cause i had it allready .I loved them but since there are Leds inside aint goin to work .

Although I prefer a case with a defined strong color (for example dark grey or granite grey or dark brown like original C64 keyboard), even better with no-slippery texture and with added fiberglass, I think totally clear-transparent cases would be great and very interesting and useful for Pyra, exactly because of LEDs inside its body: you will need to paint the case yourself with the color you wish.

A transparent case can be painted (for example with spray painting) by the case inner side. In this way you buy a standard transparent case but you transform it to the color you want, so personal like you want (even you can combine different paintings or stick films with images). And as painting is in the inner case side it doesn't wear away.

It can satisfy a lot of users who want OTHER colors, a different color not being produced. Even in this way you can have Pyra cases produced only in 2 or 3 colors more transparent (which all user can transform in the personal color they want).

PD: It may be someone can want to have a discotheque/strange-flashlight Pyra, i.e. a Pyra in transparent case without internal painting, but I think most of them would end painting its transparent cases too :) after some time in discotheque/flashlight status.

A nice theory except that you wouldn't be able to paint under any of the support structures built into the case plastics, so a uniform colour would be impossible. If that floats your boat, that's great, but it wouldn't be a good solution for mass production.

I think you misunderstand what I wrote: the mass production would be "transparent cases" (as well as normal non-transparent cases), NO "painted transparent cases". Painting transparent case would be self-made by end user if he wants to color it. ED would sell a transparent case, and if you want to paint it, it would be your task.

Except holes for screws, I think you can paint the transparent case elements without problem as fine spry painting doesn't add important thickness. For example paint thickness on a new vehicle have an average of 120 microns (divided in different layers).

In this thread we can see pics of case (in particular the top part with holes for keys/etc: https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/attachments/dsc03637-jpg.32656/ ). I don't see the problem for painting it, other than having to cover holes for screws and top surface with adhesive so that painting doesn't stain it (you want to paint inner surface, not outside surface).

Even, if you want, or if it is necessary, you can cover with tape small parts (for example borders) that support a plastic piece against other plastic piece, so that you doesn't paint those small surfaces.

Of course, I could be wrong. And of course if you add a lot of layers or you use thick paint, you can end with too much thickness to parts fit properly.

I mean, I don't even want a transparent case, so I don't mind it either way, but didn't ED at some point say that there would be 500 transparent cases produced for the ones who do want to mess with them? Or has it been decided to not do that after all?
I know azouls is literally making the cases so he'd probably right when says this, but still.

IIRC, in his contract with FormAction (the previous case company) ED had an agreement to pay for the production of 500 cases. He decided that he would tell them to make these transparent (I think that was because they had already shown they could produce transparent cases) and that ED would sell these in the shop to those who wanted to buy one. However, IIRC FormAction was having so much difficulty making the cases that they were unable to produce these 500 cases (maybe they produced some of them?) and then ED moved the moulds to the new company. In any case, those cases don't have the pegs that ensure the alignment of everything during assembly and they don't have the new shoulder buttons and they maybe lack other tweaks as well.

Does the dream of a transparent Pyra die here?

I weep.

Well, from what I can tell, the official colors planned are currently dark red, dark blue and black. I suspect that 'clear' might be done someday if there is enough demand for it, but for now, no clear on the horizon that I can see.

It feels like we're on the cusp of seeing some granite grey prototypes going out? Maybe? Hope so? I'm not sure what might be holding them up now or if it is just a time availability thing.

Yeah transparent was never a "main" colour but I was always hoping that I could at least get a case and make the switch myself. I understand people need boring utilitarian cases that are daily drivers. Not sure why anyone would want granite or red for a daily device but who the hell am I to judge. I want maybe the least reasonable case colour possible.

But if I'm dropping this much money on a device like this I was hoping to get a case that was actually kind of interesting. I will hold out hope.

I'm fine with the granite grey for the prototype. I don't know if the other seven of them are going to hold out for 'special colors' or not. I have heard no additional information that isn't publicly posted on them, so, no idea.

As to the production unit colors... you could always add a few stickers to the lid to personalize it? Order an extra case and mix & match? Red/Black, Red/Blue, Black/Red, Black/Red/Blue would all be possible by just buying an extra case or two.

I would love transparent if it looked good but if the Pyra has leds inside it seems like transparent might not look as good as I would hope. Maybe it would be nice if empty transparent cases could be bought later, I assume switching case won't be hard to do. This might also be nice in case a case gets damaged.

It's not really about it looking good or not; that to a degree is a personal opinion. It's about the keyboard I think; with a transparent or translucent plastic the light will leak out lighting up the entire area. With an opaque plastic the plastic will block the light between the keys making the letters which are shown on them light up in greater contrast with the surrounding area, making them easier to read and to determine. In fact the LEDs are between the keys because they can't be in the same place as the carbon pad, and guiding the light from through the keys relies on it bouncing back off an opaque but shiny plastic.

Edit: Personally, I'm not a fan of the display PCB to look at although I'm perfect happy at it doing its job. I'd cover that with an opaque plastic at the top, and the keyboard top needs to be opaque, but the lid inner could be clear letting you see the wrapped up LCD cable from inside. And the bottom plastic could show off the PCBs, although I'm undecided on whether to show off the battery or not.

100% time right now.
I'm preparing for the upcoming GamesCom, need to finish the new shop catalog this week it'll be printed in time :/
