Mr. x68k- do you own such a machine? I've wanted one for ages and I'll get one when I have money to burn- very cool machine in its day. And whaddya know? Sharp still make the coolest computers- I can HIGHLY recommend the Zaurus SL-Cxx00 line- these are the best truly portable computers right now, although the HTC uni will be good competition when it gets a proper OS running well on it.

I upgraded my mates GP2X to 2.0 yesterday and I was most impressed- one of the best firm/software upgrades to a machine I've ever seen. World of difference between this and the last official release. The old boot time stank and made a joke of the poor 2x- I wouldn't have dared shown it to a PSP owner or recommended to 2x to anyone. A big selling point in my mind was the ability to plug in a USB2 HD and thats only just been officially supported although I've not got to try it yet as we need to get a power brick for the USB2 drive. I also had problems with very jerky video playback under 1.4 but its looking fine under 2.0. Anyone downplaying this new firmware probably hasn't checked it out or is just trolling.

Now the problem is the hardware. My mate ordered this 2x in October/November of last year so its the original build. Its not getting used much right now as the joystick fell off and got lost within the first couple of weeks and he's yet to replace it- I have no doubt the crappy boot time put him off so he left it with me. I don't read these boards much so

1) Is the stick better on the new model- joypad? (please!)

2) Is the wonky headphone jack problem gone

3) Some batteries don't quite fit in this 2x- we have to pad out the connection with a bit of tin foil so the battery is held in place! Is this fixed?

4) Is the screen still a scratch magnet?

And of course they right royally fucked up going with the one and a bit cpu design instead of a single 400+Mhz. Had they banged in a 2700g too the PSP wouldn't have stood a chance.

If zodttd gets PSX games running at a decent rate on the 2X that will be a massive plus for the platform, if not its biggest selling point alongside its TV-out/ mpeg4 playback.

Finally, is there any chance of seeing mpc and ogg playback integrated into the official firmware?

Umm there already is mp3 and ogg playback, unless I've misunderstood?

EDIT: Come to think of it I have one scratch on mine caused by my brother, who I'm sure if I lent him a diamond he'd manage to scratch it!

It isn't. I have one scratch after putting it in my pocket with keys, something that I have been doing for 4 months...

I think your friend may not have removed the infamous second screen film on the top of the screen protector. scratch around the corner of the screen protector and see if a thin sheet of plastic pulls off...

Given that this poll is open to abuse by fanboys who have never owned a GP32 it is pretty damning that, even if only GP32 owners have voted, about half are not impressed with the GP2X. At this moment in time the GP32 wins for me too. There are people on this board who will jump to the defence of the GP2X display and the next day start a thread about how to rectify its deficiencies. If you have a BLU or BLU+ the display is not an issue. You can spout on about 'colour saturation' all you like, but a BLU display does not detract from your gaming enjoyment like the GP2X's does. Then there is the joystick, the boot up time and the feel of it.
In time the GP2X may overcome these things and the small speed advantage will put it ahead - but it will never have those sexy nipples the GP32 has on the back of the case. They feel so good !

Disclaimer: GP32 great; GP2X great. They're from a no-name company, so the fact they're not crap is something :)

The original post talks about bad screens (did you have a GP32 original, or a FLU, or go through the BLU+ nightmare?), bad stick (GP32 stick is loved by some, hated by others), combersome menu (GP32 is a pretty bad menu ;) ..

They're different animals. They're both great :)

I haven't owned a gp32 and have not voted in the poll. Note that the poll is also open to abuse by the many thousands of gp32 owners who have not bought a gp2x.

I certainly have no desire to get a gp32, but for those people who own and like them, I hope they get pleasure out of them for years to come.

mpC wasn't a typo. To be honest I haven't tried playing any on it yet as my mate still only has a 256MB card any thats pretty much full now. Does 2.0 play musepack? How about the OpenGPX2 firmware?

You're right about the screen- he'd not pulled off the protector- doh!

Good to see they're selling new caps for a quid now! Are they exactly the same as the original? Gotta superglue it on i suppose!

The GP32 was a fantastic machine, and I have had major issues with my GP2X since purchase (black, second release):

1. Poor build quality (looks like it came from a breakfast cerial mail-in coupon offer).

2. Horrible Joystick cap. I replaced mine with the PSP joystick cap. Much better!

3. The LCD makes my eyes go like this-> (fixed via Firmware update).

4. Painful USB connection to Windows (yes, windows might be the issue, but thats what I got). As a seasoned Windows Mobile / Palm developer I found it very frustrating to work with.

5. Poor battery life.

However, I do feel the 2.0 firmware release was a *major* upgrade.. I am now using the USB network connection, and I think the device has finally come into its own. Not only does it work transparently, I am now getting '480Mbps' for my network connection and it certainly is alot faster for copying files etc.

Telnet is great, as is samba, ftp, web etc.etc. The next step for me is getting more experience with Linux, as I am but a poor stupid Window$ developer. I do not mind command line tools one bit, and to me Linux is a far superior design for an Operating system - especially for embedded and mobile development. I still have a ways to go, but so far its been quite painless (since 2,0 FW that is).

So, overall, I prefer the GP2X.
