Uae4all Amiga Emulator Port To Gp2x

Hi

This looks great.

Just one question - how can I obtain the kickstart 3.1 for it to work?

I understand it is copyrighted and would have to pay for it (which is fine) but i can't see anywhere to actually download it (found the Amiga Forever site but this is £30).

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Brad

Don't ask for roms it is against forum rules, google is your friend, besides you will need kickstart1.3 not 3.1.

That's not correct, uae4all runs with any kick.rom between 1.3 and 3.1. To get best speed results you might want to try different games with different kick's. If you have a real amiga at home then you are allowed to make a legal copy of the kick.rom from YOUR machine, here's a link with some infos on how to transfer it: http://emulation.victoly.com/amiga/roms.html (you will NOT find kickstart downloads there)

If you need any further help, google is your best friend or send me a PM :)

I've had another bash at it - this time it's using hardware surfaces, and applies the changes that pepone advised me to make. Pepone - it's doing the "1024 bytes written, yay!" thing now.

I don't think this works particularly faster however, perhaps due to the way that uae4all updates the screen (using the framebuffer pointer directly, like Quake).

I've only briefly tested it, but didn't notice a vast difference.

It's here if you want to try:

http://www.vividvillage.com/uae4all-mmuhack-test3.zip

Don't be fooled by the menu running so fast - that's because of the switch to HW surfaces, which I once tried before to no great effect. It doesn't help the in-emulation experience in itself.

I guess the whole display code needs re-writing, as Squidge has said on more occasions than I care to remember :)

Don't be fooled mate, you've just slashed my "Rodland test" to 42 seconds (was 56 before MMU hack, and 52 with the "bodge hack").

It may not be running at 1000fps, but that is a big improvement in my book! I'm looking forward to hearing other people's results :D

Well, that's something at least (er... 25% faster). Thanks for the positive feedback :)

Sorry, I assumed as there were legal places you could download the rom (e.g. amiga forever) it would be okay to ask.

Thanks

Im trying to help in the testing of this hack, while it may be faster Im unsure as swapping cards and just looking and guessing if its faster is not the best way I know, so how do I show FPS in UAE4all?

Great to see this emu being worked on and updated.

edit: Btw, mouse etc seems to be reversed.

Thanks

I think there's a setting in the menu for that, right beside the sound settings and the... drive light blinky thingy... Haven't used that much.

there´s no FPS-counter atm - but i noticed that the emu runs a bit faster than before. could also be imagination ;)

btw: selcting any cpu-speed in the overclocking-menu crashes my GP2X instantly

Hi all

Got a friend round tonight who had an old amiga in his loft and we have managed to get the kick file from it.

It is now booting up on my gp2x but when i 'run' it the screen flashes to white and thats it. If i push R1 i can access the keyboard though.

Am i being a bit dim here - what do I do know?

It is 1.3 kickstart and i have loaded on a couple of games in the rom directory.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks

I've been able to reproduce Fiendicus_Prime's Rodland test results, but the difference in normal gameplay doesn't feel that great to me.

I noticed the crashing when selecting overclocking too - I'll look into that.

Finally, I also know about the reversed L and R - I think it's due to a temporary change made in the SDL lib I linked against.

Cheers for the reports - it could have gone worse ;)

From what I see, you allocate many hardware surface when you load a game. Maybe the hack have to be run after that?

30% extra FPS isn't always that obvious - I mean can your eye really tell the difference between 3 and 4 fps? - even a 100% increase in FPS isn't always that obvious to see (in my opinion). I did notice a difference with the music, seems to be clearer if that is paced right or not.

I was hoping to run some more tests tonight (maybe the SOTB title scroll up to a certain point?) but I left my SD card in my computer at work! NOOOO! That will teach me to download GP2X stuff while I should be working :)

The ideal test would be some kind of megademo I think, just allow it to run to completion and you should have tested a wide range of the Amiga's capabilities (sound/cpu/graphics). Any idea for a demo which actually runs?

Edit: Plus you can dance along to the music while you are waiting ;)

I ask the question, how are we going to test this correctly? random playing of demos or games are not going to help much without some form of data to go on as the program in its present form needs standard tests so we can compare.

E

Somebody skilled should write a native benchmark program that undertakes a range of tests and then run it on both, the GP2X and a real amiga to compare :)

Im maybe on the wrong track here, not knowing anything about benchmarking but would AIBB or similar programs help? I know there not games orientated but who knows, at least they are testing something..

runs off to find AIBB
