What's This??? A Gp2x Clone....???

Hopefully they won't confuse that many customers. At least not as long as they use the name GP5. I mean how many people are confused by PSP clones? Not that many I should think.

No, they don't. If they really recreate the hardware completely, you could just load the GPH kernel onto it.

...What did I just say?

They can't use the GPH kernel until the GPH kernel is released.... So until the GPH kernel comes out, which will happen when the GP2X comes out, the clone -- has -- no -- kernel..

No the kernel wasn't released yesterday that's the MMSP2 kernel which the GP2X kernel is based on but has to be modified for the frame buffer, tv-out, and a few other things to work.

It is quite common for chinese companies to offer a product very similar in style to another console or fashionable product that is nothing like the original, look for console clones on google. I'm sure this will not be a GP2X clone, more likely a GameBoy clone in a gp32_console case OR the picture is 'for illustration only' and the specs are BS. Either way, nothing to worry about here...

yeah, i don't think there's much to worry about at all.
the video reminded me of my last job :p

I agree with this.

I think they actually just ripped the picture of the GP2X because they will have a device that looks SIMILAR to it but it isn't far enough along to show any real pics yet. It is just a placeholder if nothing else.

The thing that gives it away is a 4" widescreen. How would you fit that into the same case? You would have to change too much.

Lets put this puppy to bed.

There are 3 possibilities for this PMP GP4.

1. **Probability 95%** It's meringue-ware (slightly more solid than vapor-ware ;) ). A Chinese company wants to make a portable media player, but the market is rather full of them and they don't want to invest in actual development unless they have a distribution agreement with somebody. They trawl for distributors on a site like alibaba (which is basically an online flea market for Asian manufacturers) hoping to drum up some interest. The player is no more than an idea and they're too lazy to even photoshop up a fake. Since you have to show SOMETHING, they use an image of the GP2X, to show what their player might look like. If by some miracle somebody actually does contact them about placing an order for 20,000 units, they can say "no problem, we'll have them for you in 4-6 months". You may notice that the description mentions nothing about games, linux OS, homebrew apps, or anything besides movies and MP3s. Any Chinese electronics manufacturer worth their salt can whip up a cheap media player with the specs they listed with off the shelf parts in a couple months, plus a couple more for production.

2. **Probability 4%** This company is either OEMing the GP2X from Gamepark holdings or licencing the design. More probably they'd LIKE to, and are posting the ad on alibaba to see it it's worth pursuing.

3. **Probability <1%** This completely unknown Chinese company is going to reverse-engineer the GP2X. Maybe their super-secret super-spies have already stolen a pre-production copy. Maybe their mad scientists have already taken it to bits and are discovering it's innermost secrets as you read this. Maybe the theft of the GP2X handheld gaming console is only their first step to total world domination. Maybe I'm going to give birth to a purple, ukulele-playing aardvark and I'll name him "Banjo".

In any of these instances, it really doesn't affect us or GPH, so everybody can stop all the worrying and threatening.

On second thought, I guess the last one would affect me. My apartment doesn't allow pets, even if they can play the uke.

However, GPH should get a retailer in China, 1 billion people is quite a market :)

yeah......umm......except they pirate stuff like crazy...

enough of this talk, let's get back to the real important issues:
so on a completely unrelated note, will GP2X be able to flawlessly play GBA Roms or what??

(hmm...waitasecond...)

I'm not sure what they're doing is illegal, per se. I mean, do Korean copyrights/patents have any weight in China?

I thinks it's kind of like anime fansubs. You can download/buy fansubs legally until the show is signed and copyrighted here in the States. I might be completely off, of course, but, from what I gather, unless GPH copyrights/patents the GP2X in China, this is legal.

...Unless they try to distibute in Korea. Then it's definitely illegal.

Bad analogy, downloading fansubs is illegal, even if they are not licensed.
Uhm nope. Sure isn't. It's just like time-delayed PVR.

Assuming you get rid of it which very few people actually do.

Anyway it's alreayd been said that China and Hong Kong are hotbeds for copyright infringment. It's rare that they ever inforce the laws there unless a large corporation comes in and threatens to reduce shipments to them unless they do something about it. Lots of times it dosent effect companies like Sony or Nintendo unless it's making direct copies of their stuff, things like those fake PSP games with game&watch LCD fighting games or something are no big deal but fake NESs or dootleg Playstation disks get the most attention.

A fake GP2X? not even going to matter to them. They'll be like "Gamepark holdings who? A tiny Korean company? Didn't we own them once? ... the country, not the company... Feh, screw 'em."

iignotus: No is not. When you use your PVR you are only doing it for yourself and you paid for the original content. You don't use your PVR, download the video, and send them to half of the world.
