They stole the design to Gamepark and they recreated a new unit using the GP2X part list.
Gamepark is aware of it for a few hours now. For the moment, they wait to see what will happen

Initial reaction
Hey Eolair, I like much your mutant multisystem GP32 signature :)
(pardon the offtopic)

This is THE most retarded thing I have ever heard of... making a pirate version of an open source underground system?!

I mean, I can understand the freakish Chinese ripoffs of Nintendo or Sony products. People will buy those out of stupidity, or simply for the amusement of seeing how crappy they are. But a ripoff of a South Korean product from a small company that most people never heard of? It makes no sense to me.

Thanks, maybe I should do like the chinese and make my own clone ;)

Oops, I made a clone of my own post. Those chinese ppl seem to affect me in a bad way :(

They just seem to see the PMP-part of it. That means it isn't as "underground" for them.

You can't tell me that its a coincidence that all the workers turned up wearing the same blue jumper?

The name of the site even gives it away. Alibaba was a famous thief in the tales of the arabian nights.

I think everybody is looking at this all wrong. This is simply the price that GPH “pays” for using GPL'd licensed software and commodity hardware. It's perfectly legitimate for anybody to make a clone of their system. Now what's not right is that these guys blatantly ripped off the “look” of the GP2X, and if they in anyway try to confuse consumers into believing their product is a GP2X that also wouldn't be right either. Using commonly available knowledge of what hardware the GP2X contains, and using GPL'd licensed code to make said hardware do something useful, isn't illegal or even unethical.

Let's say a company sells laptops with Linux pre-installed. This company has spent a good deal of time and effort figuring out what laptop hardware works well with Linux. They've had to make some changes to kernel in some cases to get certain hardware to work, and these changes had to be released to the public because of the GPL license. Now, if I go to their website and easily determine what hardware from the products documentation, then I go out and buy the parts and assemble it myself, and load up Linux using the modifications the company made-- have I done something wrong? What if I decide that I can build the clone of the original laptop for so much less money then the original builder sells it for that it makes sense to start a business selling them, have I do anything wrong?

GPH needs to distinguish themselves on factors like:
  • Build Quality of the device (ie, not built with cheap easily breakable parts)
  • Look n' Feel (think Apple)
  • Excellent closed source software for the launcher (fair game to not release the source to this as long as they don't use any GPL'd code in it's creation, and I wouldn't see why they would)
*DISCLAIMER:
All of the above is on the following absolutely wrong assumptions
  • The Chinese company making the clone will release their changes to GPL'd code.
  • The Chinese company making the clone will not blatantly rip off the physical design of the GP2X.
  • The Chinese company making the clone will be good member of the community.

It is probably illegal to copy the case of the gp2x though as this would probably be under intelectual copyright laws

I think no one here is looking at this all wrong. Has anyone said reverse engineering on hardware is illegal? We're just upset over the stolen design.

I do agree - their scum, I'm merely playing devil's advocate.

I think my disclaimer sums up the problem real well. My real question is had they made an original case, and presented themselves as 'embracing the open standard' created by GPH, would everybody still be pissed?

I *HIGHLY* doubt they'll ship before the GP2X- after all they'll have to wait for GPH to release their changes to the kernel.
