Yesterday evening I ordered a GP32 system from http://www.gp32z.com/ - it should arrive sometime next week, I'm really excited about starting to work with it :)

I never owned a gaming console before because the thought of spending $$$ on every cartridge made my stomach turn (fight the power! ;))

However I do own a TI-89 Titanium (a programmable graphing calculator in BASIC, C, and ASM). I learned the basics of C and began to make my own games, and then when I saw that there are SDK's for GP32 based off the GNU C compiler I couldn't resist it.

I guess this is my intro post to the GP community - I hope to find a good home here (you'll hear more from me don't worry, asking noobish questions). gp32_console

Welcome to the community i'm sure you will love the GP32, lots of great homebrew and emulation to be found here...

Be sure not to miss:

DRMD (Genesis emu)
Quake & Doom (Works with shareware versions)
Mame
GP Engine
Beats of Rage if you like Verical Scrolling Fighting games...

Sooooo much more to offer,

Have fun!

Welcome to the community. We're not a bad bunch but we do have our moments so make sure you've researched a noob question before asking as some here may... how shall we put it... warm your toes :)

I'm sure you'll have loads of fun with your GP32. It's a great piece of kit.:)

I really wish people wouldn't do that, we were all noobs once. Some of us like to help out the noobs, whereas others like to frighten them off (what is the point in that?). I know people should search the forums, but sometimes you get a more accurate answer to your question by creating a new post and what's the harm in a new post?

Indeed, and it's really hard to know whether a thread that you search for it still current or the best answer or whatever. Plus search functions sucks.

Anyway, welcome! :) If you need to know anything, you can check out the site it my signature.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, it's nice to find such an active and friendly community. As far as coding goes, I'll let that slide away for a while, for now I need to focus on my studies. (that doesn't mean no gaming though ;))

shinneri, your site is very helpful, lots of good reads there, thanks for the link!. :)

And yes, I'm a big fan of homebrew games, and hope to someday release a successful title myself

Its great that we're still welcoming new people into the fold - better get some practice in before the gpx2 is released - we're gonna have to do it plenty then :p

I really wish they wouldn't do it either but they do so I offered some gentle advice. :)

I have no problem at all with your comments BaDToaD, they just reminded me of the few times I've cringed when I've seen some of the more experienced people shooting noobs down.

I think I'll fire back at them next time I see someone being unreasonable.

I agree. This site used to be one of the most friendly places around, but during the past year or so it changed a little bit. Certain posters make it a hobby to diss newbies and/or to jump on people for mistakes. It's not as bad as some other places, but it used to be a little nicer here.

I'd like to see the old spirit return. Look at how Hando and EvilDragon treat people, always with good cheer. Let them be the example for everyone.

I used to think some of the grouchiness was due to people thinking the GP32 was slowing down (for a while there it seemed like it) but now we know exactly the opposite, that we're getting not one but TWO new GamePark related systems. So there's a happy future ahead. People should be cheerful around here. :)

Get some rechargeable AA's and a card-reader ! ;)

The GP32 looks nice, feels nice, and you can download tons of cool stuff for it.
I also got myself a cheap GBA softcase, maybe if you see one you should try it.

Hehe, bp32z.com ran out of 166Mhz ones, so I'll just get the regular (and $20 refund hehe :D). From what I read so far you can overlcock it with software right, so I could reach 166mhz anyway?

nope, unfortuantely thats not the case. You may get lucky with the one you ordered (i.e. it may overclock to 166 anyway) or you may not (you may only go as high as 144- the only guarantee on them is that they reach 133). It's a matter of chance when dealing with the regular units. The programs are simply modified to play at these higher clcokspeeds; if your gp can't reach them, the unit will reset itself.

Welcome! Man you're gonna just go crazy when you fool around with all the emulators. I think I lost 2 days of my life when I first got mine, just downloading like crazy.
My fav emulators:

MameGP32 (Arcade)
CaSTaway (Atari ST)
DrMD (Genesis/Megadrive)
LittleJohn (NES)
Park-o-Rama (Sega SC3000/SG1000)
fGB32 (GameBoyColour)
GPEngine (SuperGrafx/GPEngine)
fZX32 (Spectrum)

Fav homebrews:

Another World
GyroBall
Any VNS games

You'll need a cheap card reader and a 128mb smc. And lots of Duracells (though they last really well in my blu+ that doesn't mean I don't go through 'em!)
