I noticed in guyfawkes plea for splash screens for GBAX 2005 that the images would me modded to fit a number of systems, including the PSP!

Did i miss something, when was homebrew on PSP a possibility?

Sony are releasing a disc which allows you to run java based games on the PSP, as long as the games are the right resolution.

Plus you can already sort of run some java with the wipeout hack.

really?

I'm taking java right now in a school class!!!

That makes me want a psp even more..

...damnit..just a few more paychecks....

but isn't java very slow? and afaik, you can't do any java stuff with the wipeout browser
damn, i wanna learn a programming language

Craig I know you are a store owner so this may seem a stupid question, but where is all this info coming from? First you mentioned a Gameshark type UMD that would be coming from Datel or a similiar company, now you're saying Sony themselves are releasing a UMD that will allow you to run Java games... granted I may not be as informed as I used to be but I do spend a fair amount of my free time at work scouring the net for tidbits like these and always keep up with my friends at Gamestop and no one has heard or is mentioning anything about these things and they both seem to go WAY against Sony's policies on the PSP so far.... If they're really releasing said UMD's it's like Sony are ASKING for their system to be cracked....

not really. but the more sony releases, the more possible 'holes' to exploit!

Well one thing I absolutely don't get is how Datel or anyone would release a gameshark type UMD... since it's well known that Sony are being very strict with the UMD technology and basically they are the only ones who can press game UMD's, or at least that's what everyone and their mother is saying?

It's also pretty well known that game companies like Sony are usually against Gameshark style cheat devices, though until now there wasn't really a way they could stop them (remember the ancient Nintendo vs. Game Genie court battle?)... but with Sony now getting to pick and choose who and what get's put onto software UMD's I just dont see them 'allowing' a company like Datel to release a disk that could basically be the doorway we're all wishing for into cracking the PSP.

Would releasing a disk that could run Java applications also be asking for trouble? Well but then again we do know Sony will probably open the thing up wide to stuff like webrowsing so I guess the Java thing would fit nicely in with that.... so more believable I guess.

*sigh* not trying to ask for any trouble by saying this... but in related news...

If you don't care about the DS than ignore this paragraph... I just didn't think this little tidbit is worth starting a new thread over.... I was over at Emuholic for the first time in like a month right now, and it seems that the homebrew scene for the DS is coming along quite rapidly....

i just might have to cop a ds...but the screen size is a killer!! i was playing that thing today...and i got the feeling you get when you go from playing on a fat huge tv, to a puny 13"er. and i can't even look at my gba anymore :D

but yeah, the ds is pretty nice, not too bad(finally got to really playing it). mario is still the only title that interests me so i'll pass on it for now.

tell you what... and I know 95% of people here probably don't care about this, but Zodiac emulation seems to be coming along REALLY nicely... I may finally have to pick one of those up... Love my GP but the prospect of handheld Neo Geo and full speed SNES is just nagging the hell out of me. $300 seems a good deal to have those two systems on the go... analog stick or no that's just damn hard to resist

it IS! damn, i just may have to get one, too. just for neo and snes like you said.

SNES isn't really fullspeed on it though, unless you play with the sound off. Neo is even worse and is quite slow and has no audio. It just depends on how picky you are about framerate and having sound I guess.

I'm not sure what form datels PSP action replay will take, it might well work from the memorycard slot and PC (some kind of save game hacking util) but they did manage to release an actual disc for the Cube so you never know (a disc which allowed you to run homebrew too).

The 'Webtools' UMD is for the Korean launch, where they are internet obsessed so it makes sence to give them a proper browser/email/etc. to improve sales. There are not many details on it, suppose it could be a port of an open source browser?

Either way i'm pretty sure the PSP will be cracked and most likely via an exploit of some sort.

I don´t now much about java but,
is it possible to make emulators with it for the PSP??

Yes, but don't expect anything like a SNES emu, as Java just isn't fast enough for that.

I am a bit concerned about emulation on the PSP though. Even if it is cracked and games run the slowness of the LCD could make emulated games have alot of trails and smearing in them.

But do you still need that giant mother board looking thing to run homebrew or is it going on a normal GBA flash cart?

i was concerned about that, too. the more i think about it, the less likely it seems that the psp will be a homebrew powerhouse.
edit:
i'm finally going to pick up a gp32 now :D now off to find the best price... gp32_console

KickinWing: You can upload homebrew to the DS using Wifi, no need for the PassMe inteface hanging out the back :)
