The Communication Cube

Recompilation will give the pyra a huge catalogue. IIUC it's still a manual process but it's a matter of time before we'll be able to convert any rom to any target architecture easily. The up-scaling is gorgeous and the performance is mind-blowing. Re-hash obsessed IP owners will surely take note.

My Raspberry Pi 4 stopped working properly. There appeared to be some corrupted configuration files making the webservice running on it unstable. So I started investigating...

The raspberry pi is connected via an USB-adapter to an SSD and it would sometimes lose the SSD as if it's not connected.
So I checked the SSD and the adapter on my computer and they appeared to be working fine.

I checked dmesg for errors, which looked fine after a reboot. But after putting load on the system I noticed undervoltage errors, followed with the SSD being disconnected.
So I replaced the power adapter and the SSD appeared to be fine again. So I updated the software on the system and from the webservices, and there it appeared to fail again as the raspberry pi appeared to be totally off.
After a restart I ran a vcgencmd measure_temp to get the CPU temperatures, which was rising quickly from 60 to 70 degrees. And after checking the case I noticed the fan wasn't working anymore, it was broken (ordered a replacement fan).

So I guess I learned to use (even) better power adapters next time. And, again, that any home IT project is like a house of cards: everything needs to be working properly to keep it running, which requires regular maintenance.

My rpi4 is a heat sink

And a golden one at that, never seen one before.
I'm not a fan of those alu heat sinks. On my 3b+ it seemed to do next to nothing. At least without the fan on, which whined like crazy anyway.
Reminds me I need a heatsink for the opi.

I've put a new fan into the case and the temps are now stable, so everything appears to run fine again.
I do have heat-sinks in there but they're small compared to the large one netcat is showing.

For the people curious about annoying people using wireless technology: Spatial-Domain Wireless Jamming with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces
In this work, we solve this challenge by leveraging the emerging reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology, for the first time, for precise delivery of jamming signals. In particular, we propose a novel approach that allows for environment-adaptive spatial control of wireless jamming signals, granting a new degree of freedom to perform jamming attacks. We explore this novel method with extensive experimentation and demonstrate that our approach can disable the wireless communication of one or multiple victim devices while leaving neighboring devices unaffected. Notably, our method extends to challenging scenarios where wireless devices are very close to each other: We demonstrate complete denial-of-service of a Wi-Fi device while a second device located at a distance as close as 5mm remains unaffected, sustaining wireless communication at a data rate of 25Mbit/s. Lastly, we conclude by proposing potential countermeasures to thwart RIS-based spatial domain wireless jamming attacks.

Peony was bored today so I got roped into yet more character design. My task was to come up with a backstory for the character.

Here's what I've got so far: They're a 78 year old bloke called Nigel who likes playing golf and spending the odd weekend in France.

"Old" games on new 50-series nvidia cards?

Good thing you cannot purchase these cards anyway... :|
You could still use an add-in card to accelerate Physx, like a Geforce 4090. Also, you just buy the 4090 and don't worry about the 5090.
If you have the 50x0 already, you can use the 1050/1060 for example.

News thoughts regarding reason there could be possible wars starting in short term:

Mainland China vs. Taiwan
US implies support for Taiwan independence:
Future will have too much elderly people in China:
China's economy deflation:

North-Korea vs. South-Korea
US support for South-Korea unclear:
Active action of north-Korean troops:
Current tensions:

Russia vs. Ukraine (already an active war):
US drops aid for Ukraine (Today it was announced aid could be restarted):
Russia takes back Kursk region during halting of US aid:

Thoughts:
If Russia is successful in getting a deal to halt the war in the current state, keeping the current occupied territory, it could signal to China and North-Korea it's a good moment to simultaneously start a war with the territory they want to seize.
A large and inefficient war, using elderly (~50year aged) soldiers like Russia does now, would solve some future problems. Even if they would lose the war with Taiwan. It would be a big investment, but I guess the Chinese leader might make that sacrifice.
North-Korea is already in need of anything for years, so occupying the south would gain them food and some wealth.
Russia would probably support such actions as they'll be able to sell oil and other resources.
Europe has signaled it's investing but not ready yet to support Ukraine, so if a war happens now there isn't much left to help.
The US isn't clear on it's stance in supporting Taiwan, South-Korea and Ukraine with military support.
So all conditions which could signal it's a good opportunity to conduct a war.

Why it probably doesn't happen:
China indicated to be prepared to take over Taiwan in 2027, which isn't today.
US already indicated to restart aid to Ukraine, so we'll have to see what they'll do in the future.
North-Korea is hinting at war for years, I think the war didn't even officially stop so it's already ongoing technically.

I've also read something about North Korea building a new submarine with Russian help, so they miht soon shoot missiles from anywhere...
But you forget Israel, Sudan, Congo, Yemen (or was there a ceasefire?), ah, because you mean starting soon, not ongoing... I was distracted by your mention of Ukraine, I guess...
And since Trump suggests art.5 of NATO doesn't interest him, there's some possibility of something in the Baltic or maybe Poland or Moldova
Well, I thought Trump was the only one who didn't know WWIII has already started...

Btw, this 30 day ceasefire in Ukraine... is it meant to happen at the spring season when everything is muddy and tanks and stuff can't move off road anyway ? Still good for air and sea, but didn't they have some kind of relatively slow down every spring ?

US has a massive military presence in South Korea.

Trump is bluffing about pulling out of NATO - like many things. He just wants other members to spend more on defence, which I agree with.

But those other members won't do it, or not effectively and coordinated enough, and not immediately, and that's a chance for Russia, China, etc. to show they're stronger than they are.
Trump is cutting federal expense (or trying) and firing army bosses, etc. So he may not be as agile as he thinks if eventually China wants to show its superiority.
So Trump may end up losing some war despite any defying attitude, or making some theater to cover some withdrawals and ceding control to other powers, under the excuse of not helping allies because they're weak and they hadn't prepared well enough (or they just "don't have the cards").

I'm joking now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Trump claiming Alaska wasn't worth much anyway, since there weren't many golf courses or resorts there, and he's going to take Greenland any day now, after Russia annexes Alaska with some silly pretense like Putin is buying it back with part of the money the west "owns them" from "unjust" sanctions.
