Is Google Stadia the future of gaming?

Yeah, it's easy when you're part of the Pandora or Pyra community to find enough to play to stop really caring about what the big studios are publishing on PC any more. It's only because I listen to the GameOn podcast from the BBC and have a nephew playing fortnite that I even have anything of a feel for what the mainstream are playing these days.

Well, seeing as this stuff is the future now, I suppose ED could always start PyraCloud, streaming FOSS from OMAP5s at his place right to all your devices.

The latency from Germany to me in North Carolina would probably be pretty bad though. :(

It's called uploading/downloading files.

Sick of the marketing bs around "the cloud". It's made out to be some magical thing that only big name companies can do, and effectively wipes out hope of competition as most people don't know or care enough to tell the difference.

Perhaps I'm just getting old; never played PUBG or Fortnight.

I've never even heard fortnite players call it the cloud. The thing that stops them playing whenever there's an update is called the server.

But yeah, all the cloud is is a client server architecture with extreme load sharing.

Well, today, news sites are relaying reports from industry analysts who say Nintendo is looking to be next to partner with Microsoft for game streaming.

Nintendo did deny that they were going to launch any new game streaming service soon at their last financial report, but maybe they just didn't have the details in place yet.

Looks like we'll know more about GS very soon...

This summer, three of the wishes you've been asking for will finally be granted:

I was talking to my therapist today about various game stuff, and I mentioned Google Stadia. He didn't know what it was, so he looked it up on his phone. His reaction is pretty much that Stadia is awesome and will make all the money. I remain a bit skeptical, though seeing his reaction to this makes me think "Netflix for games" is a more marketable concept than I previously thought.

I just found out that the games are supposedly going to be running on Google servers which run Linux with Vulkan, so presumably their library will be strictly games with Linux ports which means that assuming this takes off it'll mean more developers seeing Linux as a viable target, hypothetically anyway.
That being said, neither of the two advertised games, Doom Eternal or Assassin's Creed Odyssey, have linux ports at the moment, but that doesn't mean they aren't working on them expressly to get them onto Stadia.

This YouTube channel I watch says that Stadia news could come sooner than later. Rumor is June 6th and that they will have Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a great fit for game streaming, because if it's turn-based like the first two, you'll hardly notice the soul-crushing input lag. ;)

Stadia news is out, and it's aggressively mediocre.

They will be selling a controller and chromecast combo for $120, plus a $10/month subscription starting in November. That's the only way to use the service until the "free tier" opens up some time next year. Games will need to be purchased ala carte, regardless of whether or not you have a subscription. All the subscription buys you is 4k HDR game streaming (free is limited to 1080p), unspecified discounts on game purchases, and occasional freebie games (no details at this time). Also, at least at launch, the service will only work on a desktop chrome browser, a chromecast ultra, and the latest pixel phones. Presumably it will open up to chrome on other devices later, since they were very adamant about it being for every device during the teaser launch.

Here's what's confirmed as far as publishers/games so far:
  • Bandai Namco: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
  • Bethesda: Doom Eternal+, Doom(2016), Rage 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, Wolfenstein: Youngblood+

lol, Insta fail!
I'd see something like this work only if a subscription enables you to play anything in their library with any controller on any device...like Netflix or spotify really...
I'd rather buy a console than pay $120 plus $10 each month plus what ever the games are going to cost if this is what it's going to be like. Also, they're most probably profiling all their customers too...
