Interestingly, he doesn't really mention reducing the volume of manufactured goods we buy.

I've a hunch that buying far fewer things, and expecting them to last longer, would make a pretty big impact, if implemented on a large scale. The move to replace single-use plastic bags with reusable ones is the right sort of idea - but we need to apply it to everything else.

Improving product lifespan often means making it lower-tech, of course, so we may have to do without the sort of toaster that updates your friendface profile. What a pity.

From what I've read eating local also helps a lot, plus it's easy to combine with a lower-waste approach by (re)using your own containers.

Guys, Trump is threatening to close the Mexican border here in the US, which could lead to the greatest political crisis of our time: avocado shortages.

He can take my land and my freedom, but I'll be damned if he takes my guac. :-||

I guess that's part of the sustainable living he talks about.

There are many different things you can do to tackle aspects of the carbon crisis, including looking at food miles. Reusing plastic containers also helps with the current focus of the waste plastic problem.

Really, modern technology should be helping with this stuff. I used to buy a CD most weeks, and about a DVD a month, but now I can either record things from the TV more easily, or stream or download things to my computer. Then I went through a phase of buying cheap tat from China on amazon, but I've been able to get a handle on that more recently I feel.

I'm still waiting for boats to get cleaner. Then I could buy stuff from china that presumably comes by boat how long it take to arrive less guiltily, although china will probably have become too middle class by then, and I'll have to find other suppliers.

There must be ways we can fix this without simply taking everything back to the 1940s less coal.

You are quite permissive/passive... don't let this happen

No matter, free market means they will come from Guatemala, Chile (best taste there is) or Israel.
Avocados are bad for the country that produces them. The trees need to be flooded with water. And actually grow where the sun shines and where it is warm, places that usually do not have much water.

I don't get the modern world sometimes. Someone in the paper the other day was saying that cheese graters were hard to clean. Now they're saying that plastic bottles are hard to clean?

The only reason I use a dedicated water bottle most of the time on hot days is that the neck of washed pop bottles is too small to get the ice cubes in.

I'll admit I do carry a plastic-lined aluminium water bottle around with me almost everywhere. I'm not sure how many different types of poisoning I'm meant to have contracted from such a hazardous practice - but so far I remain in excellent health!

Am I doing it wrong?

If you want a differential temperature to your surroundings, hot/cold, then double wall vacuum insulated stainless steel is the key.

If you don't care if everything in it quickly takes on the ambient temp - and cold contents result in condensate on the outside, then single wall stainless is, of course, lighter. The key is stainless steel inside & out.

There are tons of options and sizes in both types.

Key piece of safety info... Never put a cold carbonated beverage in a tightly sealed container that is not rated for high pressures. I made the mistake once, while backpacking, of filling a plastic canteen from a naturally carbonated 7*C mountain spring.

I bought a neoprene carrying pouch that fits my water bottle, and to my surprise it kept three ice cubes in chilled tap water from melting completely over the course of about an hour and a half, half an hour of which spent in an overheated old people's home. I previously tried some cellular sheets of dyed water that I could freeze and wrap around the outside of my pre-chilled bottle, and carry those together in my bag, but I found that defrosted in under half an hour outside, and the contents of the bottle followed shortly afterwards. It seems insulation is the way to go.

I'm also not that impressed by double walled steel vaccum containers. The older ones with glass inners and plastic outers worked a lot better in my experience, but need to be carried a lot more carefully. With double stainless the heat can travel up the inside and onto the outside at the lid, and radiate away on the outside.

Well, I don't think it's strong enough to hold a vacuum...
chapeau! What a twist.
I was going to tell you that there's a vacuum between the atoms, but that's false, actually. (there's just wave equations with lower probability of something existing there; I forgot that the materialistic world was debunked in 2015)

Scientists with a Russian accent: So it holds vodka, but not vacuum? So vacuum stronger than vodka. This is lie!
Vacuum is dirty, that is why they invented the vacuum cleaner.
[doublepost=1554509554,1554509363][/doublepost]Wikileaks released corruption evidence on the brother of the Equatorian president. President is not amused. "They" (not sure who) say he could get expelled. Details in the INA papers.

LOL! :D

Political and Nerdy at the same time:

I've seen some of those 'why is the msm ignoring this issue?' posts before on other web1.1 boards, and it usually turns out to be some nonsense that boils down to diddly squat at the end of the day, but I'm glad we only seem to have simple spammers here (and that the mods are so effective at deleting them before I see them the vast majority of the time).

Yep, it's apparently a picture of the core of M87, a supergiant elliptical galaxy in Virgo, inside the Milky Way. The milky way is also a galaxy, and I wasn't aware before today that you could have galaxies inside galaxies, but apparently you do. I guess they just haven't come up with a decent name for the super-galaxies yet.
