HDMI 1.4?? is it posable to use the audio return channels?

so as of 1.4 HDMI has a an audio return channel ARK. I'm assuming it's a digital audio feed but it would be nice to have a proper audio in method. encoding PCM is not stupidly hard can I make up a little brake out box to get 2 channel digital in?

I've never actually seen the ARC channel used and not heard of support on anything. So i don't know if it's even there in are hardware.

Any thoughts?

Also please do not confuse 1.4/1.4a/1.4b

Now i think that 3.5mm headphone jack will be included and if so that should be enough,.Also plain USB should be enough for headphones or smaller sound systems,as an end alternative you could use usb to 3.5mm converter which would give you both audio and mic options.

Good question. While the Pyra will have mic in on its headset port, it's hard work wiring anything line level up as a microphone, and it will have bluetooth audio in, but that's a long way from hifi. Probably the best quality audio in will be the HDMI ARC, but I don't know how that's represented in a Linux system. Provided the drivers are implemented fully and set up properly, it'll probably appear as a device under /dev and from there you should be able to interface with it with appropriate tools, but I don't know what state drivers are in, or how they present the data.
 
HDMI has a lot of optional crap specified that never really ended up being commonly used. I don't think you'll get anything beyond audio out.

Audio support is realized by hooking up external hardware. In the end you would just use one of the input channels that are already provided by the existing ALSA driver. However, HDMI uses a custom data format and I doubt the OMAP supports it with anything other than audio out.
