Some quick information regarding preorders

720p vs. 1080p does make a difference in some cases, even on 5". The higher DPI really helps with some east asian scripts (assuming you crank up the font size accordingly), like Hangeul (Korean) and anything touching chinese characters. For most users of a device like the Pyra, this isn't really worth much as a feature.

Actually even the Pandora screen is fine for Chinese characters in the pretty small font size I use in rxvt. The more complex ones obviously don't look beautiful at this size but they remain readable (sometimes only in context, though).

Edit: sometimes more pixels makes Hanzi uglier because strokes have different width and grow unevenly (antialiasing/subpixel positioning doesn't help much, sometimes makes it worse). Only in large sizes these even out and look balanced again.

Readable, yes (those that don't turn into a smudge), but you can certianly tell the difference between high DPI and higher DPI.

You're going to a box? And that shall benefit Japan? Sorry, but I don't get it.

Not sure if you are joking or not, but Stainy missed out the word "get" from his quote. ie "Are we going to get a nice, lovely box for Japan"

That stems from Ekianjo, IIRC, who created some really nice Japanese-centric Pandora boxes a while back, which he offered to the community for sale - either as the box alone or as a box filled with Japanese goodies.

I thought, he might have meant to say "going for", but I still had no idea, what it was about. Thanks.

Screen quality is not just determined but it's resolution... I would definitely prefer a good quality 720 screen over 1080.
Also 1080 means a lot more pixel to compute... I am not sure that is worth it for a 5' inch screen.

In any case, the discussion is kind of pointless as Linux desktop and application are mostly not ready for HiDPI. 720p make a lot more sense on the Pyra.

full ack!
That's the point!
So why bitch about how "low" the resolution is when it is a non-issue unless you are chasing specs that will not improve the usability?

Since you answered that
Don't get me wrong, I think 720p is fine for the Pyra (I would't have preordered one otherwise)! But if "normal" people argue about the Pyra specs or the price, they don't do that because they are stupid. They are just not fanboys so they compare the Pyra to the latest smartphones.
The smarthphones that increase specs just so that their numbers are a little higher than the previous model, or the competition? There is a major difference in intended use between a smartphone and a Pyra. The Pyra should be looked at as more with the mindset of using the desktop and programs that go along with that. The screen is already pretty small, but it would be nearly unusable, as ED tested, due to default settings making everything too small. Since some of the software is coming from a general repo for many different devices it is unreasonable to think that everything will be changed due to the small screen of the Pyra. Even if that is done, as soon as you plug in a typical monitor everything will be huge and a waste of space. It isn't about being a fanboy, it is about being practical.

I still don't see the value of having 4K displays on any handheld device, other than to try to show off your specs, and what user does that, really?

Are we going to a nice, lovely box for Japan, like we did with the Pandora? or even use that kind of box for the UK/US etc...

I loved that box design
I was looking forward to a common brown cardboard box with the name, a place to mark which model the unit inside is, and maybe the logo. If ED wants more flashy stuff, I suppose he could go with a full color box with pictures and words all over it, like the one for the Pandora. That, and the wood box would look nice on a store shelf, but I am unlikely to see them on a shelf. It also might look fancy, however I have come to appreciate the simple brown cardboard box since more companies have started going with them.
