Xgp = Vaporware?

I am well aware of the original reasons, but they no longer apply, as you said yourself. So yes, really.

Well the original reasons was why they split, so at that time the reasons for the split weren't silly as they weren't headed in the same direction.

Gamepark wanted to do a more expensive PSP clone with a widescreen, 3D, custom battery and analog controls. This would be not as well suited for emus but aimed more for commercial titles. It wasn't until recently that they flip-flopped and decided to make it more GP2X-like and HB friendly. They probably finally realized that they had absolutely no chance in the commercial market against Sony and Nintendo.
Where does this information come from? GPH? That's not the story I was told by Gamepark. They said they never wanted to get rid of the homebrew aspect of their consoles. They did, however, want to make a more commercial-friendly platform though, which clearly wasn't something GPH is interested in.

How does the i.MX31 compare to other chips for 2d acceleration? I don't understand how it could double the power of the gp2x... is it an 800mhz proccesor? I know that the second core is hard to use but it is still usable.

The Graphics Processing Unit provides hardware acceleration for 3D AND 2D graphics algorithms. The i.MX31 core has a _minimum_ rated clock frequency twice that of an overclocked GP2X and the core is the newer and more capable ARM11 ARMv6 architecture vs the ARM9 in the GP2X.

I didn't say they wanted to "get rid of" homebrew just that they would focus more on the commercial end. That means make the hardware more tailored towards it (hence the widescreen, 3d, analog stick etc which are less favorable to emus and better suited to original games). They would allow the HB aspect but it wasn't their main thing. They were going to pursue the commercial aspect and have stuff ready, unlike GPH that just made the hardware and threw it out there to let the scene make stuff for it. Now Gamepark made it more HB friendly (emus) by aledgedly making the controller a pad rather than an analog stick. They were also reportedly looking at the possibility of using a 4:3 screen as well (don't know if that stuck). To me that sounds like they were abandoning the commercial focus and shifting to more of a GP2X type emu box. Who really knows though.

Lets face the facts folks...

No news since march 2006

No active links in their main web page

No launch in late 2006

The XGP series is a lost cause of expenses producing 3 different products aimed at different ages, gender, whatever. But I would pay a little extra for my GP2X deviced if it had 2d/3d acceleration. All that wifi , webbrowser, windows CE are nice application but in the end their just mere novelties.

Its all about open source & games. A title that GamePark should take pride in producing their next product, instead of this whole company split. A good example of all these applications being a mere novelty would be the gizmondo.

Wikipedia and accurate are rarely two words that go together.

I'd say that depends on the topic. Articles in commercial encyclopedias aren't inherently any more accurate simply because they're produced in a corporate environment. An article is likely to be more accurate when it's created by an educated authority on the subject, and Wikipedia is accessible by those individuals as well. In fact, I'd say those people would be the most concerned with maintaining articles and so would pay the closest attention to its subject material.

Freeware and open source can be just as good as or exceed the quality of commercial productions.

I think the xgp is so dead that there shouldn't even be a forum for it. Specs don't look that interesting even if it did come out. Also the way it is curved looks annoying on the website and the use of an analog stick without a dpad in addition to it is just stupid. Just because the next gen will emulate ps1 doesn't mean im not still going to emulate megadrive. I don't have much faith in a gp3x either.

we diddnt have faith in the gp2x in the gp32 days then BAM!

so im quietly more confident in the gp3x or what ever guise it comes out under

I constantly think it's "dead" and then every 6 months or so there's some obscure news item that restores my hope, but then nothing again...

I think the Gp3x will happen way before the XGP which is most likely dead.

The chance of XGP=Vaporware is very very high. From a reliable source, I heard that GP is going through very difficult time in terms of man power and finances. they are not sure whether they can launch GPkiDS not to mention XGP and mini. As a person who used to have faith in them, it is kinda disappointing. Anyway, I heard that the PR guy from GP moved on with his career at another company. so I guess no more of swifty reply from GP from now on.

May I ask you who your source is, or is it top secret information...

Anyway, I don't doubt what you say. Their PR guy hasn't gotten back to me and it's been weeks (he had been very prompt in the past). Very sad. I very much wanted that mini. :(

It is no secret. My friend's friend used to work for GP until late last year and I heard the news I mentioned above from him

Oh well, I have moved onto the PSP (after getting it at one of those "Refer your friends and get a free PSP!" sites).

That's sad news. GamePark is the roots of this community.

Companies come and go..
I wonder, is there any kind of news about a GP2X successor? (like, GP3X or something?) Are they even planning one?
