Which is stronger: 3DS or 1GHz model Pandora?

The 3DS has a stronger gpu afaik.

The main processor of the 3DS is weaker though. Also it has less RAM.

Nintendo never produces strong hardware, they try to produce affordable hardware and puts the strength on the software.

The processor is an ARM11, which is a generation before the current ARMv7.

It's hard to do proper benchmarks, but even a classic Pandora should be faster in benchmarks.

It's all about how much effort goes into optimizing games for a platform.

A friend of mine used to program games for the 3ds. He said it was really hard to get good performance out of it. Even only to get the graphical quality of the psp.

Then also you need to render a lot of pixels for two viewports when you use stereo 3d.

But never the less they got some pretty nice looking games out of it.

Edit: If you see that the Pandora can run PC games like Jediknight 2 or Freespace, I guess it is the winner here even though the 3ds has commercial studios and developers behind it that do nothing but optimize games for it.

A vita might have 4 times the raw cpu and gpu power.

It uses a quad core armv7 processor and a quad core gpu.

Edit: the gpu of the vita is a successor of the gpu used in the Pandora from the same company afaik.

Of course it all depends on how good programs can use the power given to them by the hardware.

3DS is using 2xARM11 at only 268MHz. I don't know things like memory performance or if it has L2 cache (or how good it is), but I wouldn't have high expectations for either. We're talking around 2004-level mobile CPU hardware here, and at best similar to the PSP. This is much, much weaker than Pandora's CPU, even for stuff that can make good use of both cores.

The GPU is stronger and probably has lower overhead APIs too, but it's less flexible.

This combination of very weak CPU paired with moderately powerful GPU (relatively speaking) can work when all your games are developed specifically for it but would be a nightmare for something like Pandora that runs a lot of ports and emulators.

If we're talking strength, I wouldn't fancy standing on either my 3DS or my Pandora. I think either could withstand a heavy book on top of them though, so the limit must be somewhere in between.
I would put both on wheels and let them crash together. With the battery the Pandora probably weights more, so I guess it might do quite some damage. I'd expect both to still work afterwards, though. The Vita might take damage to the screen, since it's more exposed.

I remember a "console crash test" where the Nintendo one was pretty damaged, but still bootable.

The other one were more or less dead.

Nintendo tends to make durable consoles and pandora's plastic is not top quality.

Not sure how ported games (there are some official ones AFAIK) an Emulators run onto the NDS, maybe the Pandora is the better achine when it comes to this.

But still impressive what Nintendo can pull out of that comparable "weak" Hardware. Pandora needs much more CPU power to reach equal quality in graphics. I don't know where Nintendo "cheats" to bring such impressive 3D games onto the little DS but maybe they know all CPU/GPU tricks.... or just don't use a full Linux underneeth, who knows.

Pandora can do (and does) much, much higher quality 3D games than Nintendo DS. Not sure what you're talking about here. Or do you mean the CPU requirements for DraStic?

It's doesn't matter really . Console and computer power is There but what matters is optimization ( to a point ) Why aren't there more gamers using Mac pros ?

Is this a joke? You never had a ds hinge problem before apparently,

Nope, I still own my original DS "Tank" and it works like a breeze. (I bought it from "Nintendo V.I.P." thingy, so I was one of the first to own a DS in Belgium :p )

I have a small crack on a corner of the lower screen and scratches everywhere on the outer shell, but that's all.

EDIT : and the DS is dirty… I should clean it. And buy a new battery  -_-

I never used any carry case for the DS and I tend to flip to screen open/close quite violently.

I thought this topic was about the case strength.

I guess the 3DS would win there?

Anybody care to drop them from the same height, or put something heavy on them?

Case?

Than it's 100% the 3DS.

It's made for children as well.

At least the 3DS XL is nearly unbreakable.

No, not at all, don't worry. I was thinking about which Handheld is better FOR emulation, not as emulation. ;) And I guess the Pandora can emulate other systems much better than an NDS (as far as Emulators exist for the NDS).  On the other side, I believe that dedicated games can run better and faster on an NDS (or PS VITA) than onto an Pandora because the devs there usualy have accesss and documents to each corner of the Hardware, but this is just speculation and depends of each game.
