I don't know how many of you have both, but I just thought I would share which ones I like on which platform, and was wondering which way you guys lean at this point.

MAME - not even close, Franxis hit this one out of the park, the GP32 owns
NES - close, but I like the GP32 for the joystick and the full screen
SNES - PSP takes this one, they keep getting faster every day
Genesis - GP32 wins again
TurboGrafix - GP32

Movies - probably not fair, but the PSP of course, LOTR looks amazing on it

Coolness factor - it's close, the PSP is sweet, but EVERYONE is getting one, who the hell else out there has a GP32? At least here in the states?

Let me know what you guys think, I am curious.

I just feel that overall the GP32 is nicer for homebrew/emulation. On the PSP there are those mandatory FW updates that could prevent you from playing the homebrew for at least as long as it takes to crack the new FW.. And that's sure to get harder and harder--especially now that the crack is being used for stealing commercial games. Sony's going to start coming down hard with these FW updates. I think the only reason they haven't yet is because they don't have any good game to actually implement the mandatory upgrade in... but GTA's coming, guys. PSP is more powerful, so emus will eventually be better (or equivalent) to the GP32 emu, but let's just hope we'll be able to USE them.

Gamepark, on the other hand, FULLY supports homebrew/emulation, and there's no worry to sacrifice commercial games for emus because, well, there's not much BESIDES the homebrew and emulation. This community's just simply much friendlier and smarter, too.

Oh, and I'm another US GP owner! :D

Eventually all emulators will be better speed wise on the PSP just because of the faster CPU. The screen aspect ratio and resolution match better on the GP32 and the LCD response is faster so no ghosting though and the stick is better than that d-pad on the PSP that doesn't do diagonals very well. So it is still good to have both.

*sigh* how long are we going to keep beating this subject to death?

You missed one on PSP bud.... perfectly Neo Geo CD emulation full speed with sound at FS 1 :D

I didn't miss it, I haven't played it yet. Like I say, just curious what people thought. I personally think that a couple of these won't get any better on the PSP, i.e. NES, Genesis, TurboGrafix.... I think the GP32 will remain on top due to controls and screen size, you can't really make these any faster on a PSP I don't think.

As for what will be beteer on a PSP, SNES, Neo Geo, possibly MAME if someone out there realizes you can't use the latest version of MAME on a 333 Mhz proc. I am hoping someone out there will figure out that a later version of code would suit the PSP just fine. Until then though, Franxis version is quite excellent.

I agree pretty much, but I believe you yourself said "once an emulator is perfect, it won't be more perfect on PSP", and we have pretty much perfect Genesis/Mega Drive and NES, so I doubt these can be particularly better on PSP. I suppose the Genesis could be full speed with FS 0, but on DrMD the frameskip isn't noticeable on many games anyway, so this isn't important. Even so, it would take a lot of work to get a Genesis emulator to DrMD standards, even on a 333Mhz CPU.

These comparisons should be made when the PSP is a little further into it's life. It will eventually be able to do just as well and if not better than the GP32 with emulation.

How wrong you are. People really need to stop saying this, it's just not true.

there is plenty of room for improvement in genesis and TG16 as they are on the GP32. DrMD runs GREAT, no doubt, but on many games it also runs a really high frameskip, even at 166mhz. Don't agree? Play Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, or Vectorman 1/2. Considering PSP is already running Neo Geo perfectly, and NG is obviously quite a bit harder to run than Genesis, I'm gonna guess that eventually Genesis will probably be full speed with NO frameskip.

TG16 COULD be near perfect on GP32 IF someone get's back to it... fPCE32 might be, if/when it ever comes out. But GPEngine has plenty of room for improvement, many games also only run full speed at only 20 or 30fps even at 166mhz. There's also no voice/DAC support or save support (not just save states, what about battery saving for Neutopia etc.?) in GPEngine which both have already been implemented in the PSP TG16 emu. Also, the PSP TG16 emu already supports playing the Super CD-ROM games from Iso/MP3 (Dracula X on the go, anyone?), something the GP32 will NEVER do.

I would expect Sega CD emulation would also be probable at some point on the PSP. Maybe also 32x and SuperGraphx... all things you will most likely never see on the GP.

I agree you probably can't improve NES much, maybe compatibility for what few games don't run right on Little John. Or maybe support for famicom disk games (which I think is already in the PSP emu?). And yeah, the controls are better on the GP (funny though a lot of people used to bitch about the GP stick as well), and yes, the full screen on the lower res GP 32 looks much better for older games. But make no mistake, emulation on the PSP has already overtook emulation on the GP32 in many respects and at some point, it will be almost 'total domination' of the one over the other.

Indeed. YoyoFR is a legend for porting that.

I think for the last GPM I'm going to try and collect interviews from the big name coders and see what they're up to these days. I think it would be a nice way to finish, if they agree.

EDIT: Is it a port, or written from scratch?

We will see what happens if fDay ever comes. If he gets those emus to run real good then I would prefer those on the GP32 over the PSP because of the controller and the full screen. Also the GP32 doesn't have a slow LCD that smears like the PSP. The PSP will be used for everything else like SNES and NEO that can't be done on the GP32.

whats the state of the psp amiga emu? The fact their is one is really tempting me into splashing out on one.

AMIGA RULES!!!

Well it does.

I must say I am becoming tempted by NeoGeo and SNES, and I am amazed at the speed of which the PSP scene is progressing.

Unfortunately I can't afford one right now, so I guess I'll sit back, wait and see what happens.

Have you thought about selling a kidney? Knocking over a bank? Mugging an old woman? Blackmailing a local politician?

You've got to get a PSP. :D

The second PSP processor can now be accessed by homebrew (the 'Media Engine'), and its been proven that it just can about do anything the main one can, so this could mean one processor emulating the cpu & sound, whilst the other handles the graphics emulation :)

So, it'll open up a whole new range of emu's if the emu is coded to take advantage of the second processor.

Hmm, full speed fs0 snes, gba, etc :)

the fun has just begun :D

haven't touched my PSP or checked out the 'scene' in weeks... wonder what I've been missing??
