What software do we want from the Rebirth Competition?

I think we can give ideas of what we would like to see, personally as a gamer I am interested in diferent emulators that I think could be possible with fullspeed on the Pandora hardware, here is my list:

N64

Neo Geo CD (I think there is already a port but I am told that it works to fast)

Cps2

Cps3

Coinops - Killer Instinc 1 and 2

A boot to media player environment (e.g. XBMC with Pandora-specific tweaks)

Improved sleep mode / suspend to RAM / similar. If the N900series can do it, so can the pandora

+1

Actually there has been a port of U64 for the old Xbox that worked nearly perfect as far as I remember.

I'd also love to see some ports, which I thought/hoped to be already worked on:

- Alien vs. Predator (the old one)

- Return to Castle Wolfenstein

- Doom3

Also I would greatly appreciate a good mediaplayer. Performance should be better or equal to Panplayer. On top it should offer more Features like scaling, postprocessing, playlists etc. The former port of XMBC wasn't too bad (thoug a little instable). But it stopped working for me for any OS update since Hotfix 4 or so.

Personally, my vote will probably be going towards whatever increases the overall functionality of the Pandora. If somebody can write something which makes use of the keyboard lock (i forget the name, the 3rd position for the power switch), increase battery life, decrease boot-up time, or something similar, it would be of benefit to everyone who owns a Pandora, and may assist every time they use it.

Definitely improved N64 and nice and creative homebrew. :)

Sega Dreamcast Emulator

Would be great, but I didnt put it in my list cause I think its not posible tu run fullspeed on Pandora ( I am only interested in fullspeed emulation), dont know, maybe I am wrong.

A DSP based audio player that can run without hardly touching the primary CPU.

Instant winner.

Yeah, after seeng what Notaz and Exophase have acheeved with the Ps1 emulator, I am starting to think fullspeed N64 could be posible, Pandora coders are amazing.

Isn't that a double negative?

But yes, The Pandora's media playing potential does seem underrated. Its got:

  • top-notch SQ
  • buttons
  • lots of storage space
  • a huge battery
  • a nice screen
  • a good chunk of processing power
  • TV out
  • Plays heaps of codecs
  • speakers
  • fits in a pocket

A power efficient media player mode (while siphoning off some RAM for the DSP) would be awesome

Port or original creative media programs, like trackers, animation programs, paint ones, sampling, bla bla, whatever gets pandora media productivity tools would be nice.

Something similar to NUDGE would also be great.

Although I believe it already has a great amount of creative ones

I'd like to try and port FreeJ and PD-extended ... but I'm not sure if I'm up for it.

For starters I'm trying to package my (little crappy) port of qomodoro.

- Return to Castle Wolfenstein
That's what I would like to see, but my guess is that 1 1/2 months might be too short to get something like this up and running.

I could imagine someone to take on one of the existing Quake1, Quake2 and/or Quake3 ports and optimize it?

Not sure about Quake1, it is marked as beta ... I did not read much about the Quake2 port, but a lot of people complained about the controls in Quake3 for example. There may be other existing ports worth updating ...

But I think the most interesting .PNDs in the competition will be the ones that bring something completely new, something nobody really thought about. A new game concept that utilizes the different control options the Pandora has, maybe in a new way even, or an application that suddenly enables you to use the Pandora for something you never thought about.

How about a pandora native BBC computer emulator. The GP2X had an excellent one but whilst this runs under Ginge it isn't quite so perfect via that method and you obviously can't use the keyboard.

Easy to use phone or VoIP pnd! Once i can send and recieve both phone calls and sms messages, my pandora will be complete :p .

Port of 'Blood' :)
That would be spiffy, but somehow monolith lost the source code for the game.. so any easy port would be difficult.. There was so many updates done by monolith to the engine, the game files (Artwork, maps and such) will not play nice with the opensource duke3d engine (eduke32).. There has been some efforts to take the artwork from the game and make a total conversion using the eduke32 engine.. but so far none have any of the original maps. Also there has been Transfusion which is a Quake Total conversion using the Dark Places engine it has the Blood look, sounds and feel and has some maps from the original game.. but it's multiplayer only...

I'm not sure a static recompilation could be done, similar to what was done with Warcraft I: Orcs vs Humans. I take it from what I read doing this is very difficult.

Yeah. Port of Blood or Terminator: Future Shock in MH-T style :)

eventually proper Haiku OS build for OP. [ARM builds exist, but theres not enough info about how to install , and these builds are rather old (circa 2009)]. I would love to re-start my dev work on Haiku on OP :]
