I do have some live Linux distros that wont work on my PC..even though I have the CD-ROM as the first boot device...
Why don't they work? what happens when you boot off them?

Oh and try Simply Mepis, It's up there with Ubuntu for user friendlyness.

The reason I'm on SuSE is because I have issues with SATA. SuSE is using an old kernel back when SATA was detected as IDE. The newer Distros all use the latest Kernel which sees SATA as SCSI. For some reason if I boot the latest kernel I loose all my SATA drives but hotplugging works for my firewire and usb2 drives. If i use an older distro I can see my internal drives but loose the externals.

If I could get over that problem I'd move to Debian.

I use windows....... and I hate it.
I am trying to get linux running properly on a second PC I have, but i'm having a lot of trouble getting the wireless USB network adaptor..... I've read about and iignotus was guiding me through it through IM, but iignotus said that I needed to download the source for the kernel in order to get ndiswrapper working properly, and when I tried to do that debian gave me a bunch of dependency stuff that meant I had to delete gcc and about 6 other important programs, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I have debian linux running on the pc fine, i just don't have internet, and without internet that pc is just about useless to me. I may try again with ubuntu when I get some free time.

MAC OSX RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sadlyim using windows cuz my mac dont got internet (oh how can i get linux?)

old pc: Win98
newer pc: WinXP

I'm just too lazy to mess around with Linux...I know I could do it. But I don't have DSL so I'd have to buy a disc, I'm not downloading an .iso for 3 months just for it to corrupt at some point in the process.

I hate a lot of stuff that Windows does and if/when MS puts TCPA into Windows, I'll go to Linux.

I don't use Macs or MacOS because they actually manage to be even more proprietary than Windows.

Win 2000 Pro

I'm planning to buy a 14" G4 iBook soon, however, and am currently browsing eBay for a good price. I decided that I'd find some of the programs that iLife comes with mighty usefull (iMovie in particular, because Windows Movie Maker is extremely buggy), and I needed a laptop anyway. Curiously enough, about 60% of the laptops in my university (York, in Canada) are macs.

Never used linux... and I've never been much of a programmer. An OS to me is a means to an end (it should stand in the way as little as possible), so I like the approach that OSX on the Mac has. I don't see anything wrong with proprietary software as long as it's designed really well and does what it's supposed to do.

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

you just need to wait a bit until you get the cd :)

If you want a different distro, just search for sites like the following where you can get CDs/DVDs very cheap: http://www.thelinuxshop.co.uk/catalog/

I would use MacOSX if I would have a computer from apple, but I don't have the money to buy one. I prefer Linux over Windows because it really "just runs" (if you don't want to do special things like using the latest beta-software).

I used the Ubuntu LiveCD for a while and fell in love.
Now I'm waiting for a shipping label so I can get my laptop shipped, fixed, and sent back to me with a fresh Windows XP install so I can obliterate it and install Ubuntu instead. ;)

SuSE 10.0 on my main computer and laptop
SuSE 9.3 on my "Media Box" cause Im lazy

work: windows 98-XP some linux various distros

Windows XP/Gentoo 2.6.13 on desktop (also has FreeBSD, uggh) on desktop

Windows 98SE on old Compaq laptop

XP on wifes desktop

Windows 3.11, 98, 98SE, ME, 2k, NT, XP, 2003 Advanced Server canned in Bochs/Qemu at work

Still like DOS & CP/M best tho . . . simpler except for memory calls . . .

I've used Linux for three years now. Very happy not to be "Windows" dependent. I use SuSE 9.2 on my desktop. I use KnoppiXMAME for playing games. I use Lycoris desktop/lx Linux on my two laptops. I do have a windows partition on my desktop. But I never really use it much for anything. :D
