What Is Sony Thinking?!!??

That advert is really really stupid. I'de rather have anything else but that. It looks like a white punk is choking a black man. Come on?

Also, I don't feel it's fair that you're catagorizing the stuck pixel controversy and an advertisement together. They're two different things entirely.

The message isnt a black male and a white male, or a black female and a white female. The black man is being dominated by the white WOMAN. Please take that into account as it's quite different now.

Indeed the ad does touch people in the wrong spot, but everyone IS talking about the psp. As others have said, it's getting major publicity. I think they thought this one out quite well, and decided it was a risk they were willing to take. I see nothing wrong about it.
They both gained publicity for their system, so they're the same. I was simply proving all publicity isn't always good.

And that black man actually is a woman. ;) Check this link. It has a few more images from this ad campaign..

This isn't "reverse racism". It's plain racism.

You are right that racism can occur either way, but the fact that you refer to it as "reverse racism" still suggests that white on black racism is in some way more real.

this is a hot topic in a bunch of soc classes I've taken. you have to understand that reverse racism is a concept; it's not meant to be offensive. I agree with you- it's just a term used by a number of sociologists (I'm a soc major).
For the record half of my degree is in sociology, and I've never seen that term used in an academic sense to mean "black on white racism".

"Reverse racism" is a term coined up to mean positive discrimination (also known as affirmative action in the US).

Even in Holland the name of a product called "negerzoenen" or (niggerkisses, roughly translated). This candy was called like this for ages. And now, because some fucked up person thinks this is racism, they named it "zoenen" or (kisses) after 80 years or something!!!

niggerkisses!? sounds pretty fucking racist to me man, what does it matter if it's been around for 80 years?

In Germany they are called "Negerküsse" - "Negroe's kisses". Now changed to "foam kisses"....

As for the ad, yes, that's racist. It depicts white people as aggressive cholerics that can barely control their anger. Look at her left hand - claw-like, ready to strike. Also, why does Sony think all white people are satanic? And if they don't, then why does the white woman wear an upside-down cross?

I for one am offended.

wow i didn't even notice the upside down cross   but that makes it even worse than it already was.

The ad is not sexual, the ad is pure white going to kick black ass portrayed very poorly. Mosch is absolutely correct, the other hand is poised to rip the guts out of the black "chick" and the upside down cross, well, that was probably another poor, planned, sony choice for advertising.

Unless the white psp is the anti-christ

word, I never heard it in that respects until one particular class I took, but I really think the term was being misused. Your right; it is for positive discrimination. I should stop referring to it in the other sense; I think my (shitty) prof didn't really know what it meant and it skewed my own definition of the term. I'm a double major as well btw; what school do you attend?

I love the fact it turns out to be a woman. I think it is a powerful, sexy image. The fact it is two woman enhances it for me ( that just might be a personal quirk - but I suspect it is actually pretty universal amongst males).
What really is worthy of comment is this stupid reaction to it. This white power theory does not hold when you consider Sony are a Japanese company. Orientals are hardly top of the Ku Klux Klan's list of dinner party guests or exempt from the National Front's repatriation policies.
Racism is an evil that exists because it is a way for people to vent their petty frustations, divert attention from their own inadequacies and bond with like-minded others. Very similar to those who have got swept up in this on-going criticism aimed at Sony.
Who actually has so little else going on that they care so passionately about a Japanese electronics manufacturer one way or the other ? The same sort who care what colour a hand held is probably.
Just look what is going on here. People are hallucinating negative aspects and attributing them to Sony. Typical bigoted, racist type thinking . Look at the image. The white woman is not holding the black woman's throat. She is not wearing an inverted crucifix - the 'crossbeam' is part of her bra.
Go play some DrMd or something before you start seeing swastikas and indications of cannabilism in it.

i would bet the "inverted cross" whatever it is was planned part of the ad. It's too clear and easy to see to be an "accident"

Plus Jabberwocky, your pretty hipocritical, you can critize everybody for believing what they believe and criticize people posting in this topic but yet the largest posts in this topic are yours.

plus, and i didn't post it here because i didn't want to cause an uproar, but google find the PSP ad that was pulled in Italy, it's real bad. I personally didn't understand it myself, but the picture was bad enough, especially to be done in Italy.

I have no idea what your point is. Maybe if you find out the meaning of hypocritical and replace it with whatever adjective conveys what you actually mean it would help.

I really don't care enough to go googling for more of this trash. I am amazed that you bothered.

actually the other ad was in the same thread i originally took this information from, but since the ad plays off on the church, i would rather stay away from that since that religion is probably a more sensitive issue than racism, but just proves that Sony is not using their heads on this and i find it hard to believe that you don't see even an inklink of a problem with these ads. Racist or not, its just poor judgement from the very beginning.

And yes i believe you to be hipocritcal. Again, you poke fun at me for taking the time to read an article that has been posted so far on probably a dozen different gaming sites, but yet you take the time to type the 2 largest posts in the thread.

WTF IS THE MATTER WITH YOU ALL? PLEASE! LOOK OBJECTIVELY FOR ONE SECOND. YOU'RE ALL FOCUSING ON THE AD WITH THE BLACK WOMAN BEING TAKEN BY THE WHITE ONE! NOT THE OTHER AD WHERE THE BLACK WOMAN IS TAKING THE WHITE WOMAN. JESUS, YOU'RE ALL BLABBERING ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACY AND RACISM, BUT THERE ARE OTHER ADS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT. GO BACK AND LOOK FOR FUCKS SAKE.

;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

In this society, we all suffer from Goofy and Pluto syndrome. In disney world, Goofy is like a human while Pluto is a pet, although they're the same breed of dog. Peoples are completely ok with this obvious double standard. We're all hypocrats, and selectively see justice in life, while hoping and claiming otherwise.

I'm not sure about that. The fact that 75% or more people in this thread originally thought it was a black man (I certainly did) suggests we weren't particularly turned on by it.

In general I tend to agree with a lot of complaints about racist or sexist imagery or language in media. In this case, I think it's a really poor choice to personify product models using skin color as the distinguishing factor (it makes sense of course, it's just in exceptionally poor taste). However, I don't think the campaign itself is particularly racist beyond that.

Would you classify the Japanese people who run sony as white? Why would they encourage white supremecy in anyway?

If you believe it is poor judgement please explain your reasons for thinking that. Representing black and white using skin colour will only be an issue as long as people judge others by their colour. All this PC crap is just perpetuating the issues it is supposed to eliminate.

hypocritical - adj : professing feelings or virtues one does not have.
Sorry - I still don't understand how you have come to that conclusion.

I was not aware that I poked fun at anyone - please refer me to where I did that so I can apologise.
If the number of sites information is posted on is an indication of its validity then Elvis is still alive and the world is secretly being run by aliens.

That just shows how easily people jump to conclusions without examining the evidence properly. I found her sexy when I assumed she was dominating a male.
