Yes! thats very true, what would you recomend regarding a good pc RPG?
Trying to stay in the Fallout approach:
If you're not opposed to low resolution and old graphics, the Ultima series comes to mind. Well, the first 3 are really dated and not really interesting. The fourth has an interesting concept, but is dated as well and the concept quickly turns to just a different kind of grind. The fifth starts the transition to a more modern game and also has an interesting concept but can still be hard to approach.
I think the sixth (and the World of Ultimas running on the same engine) is the first game that doesn't feel too dated gameplay wise.
Ultima 7 is one of the best computer RPG ever: interesting story and an open living world with a lot of possible interactions. I spent a lot of time having fun playing it as a sandbox game before taking on the actual quests (and discovered a completely different aspect of the game when I did).
Ultima 8 is far more action oriented and the transition from the huge interactive sandbox to a very railroaded adventure made it a big disappointment, there were also some bugs and problems that were only fixed with a patch that few players actually got their hands on back in the day, so it suffers from a very bad reputation. On its own, it's a decent action RPG and it has a surprising take on the hero's quest.
Ultima 9 took a long time to be released, was extremely buggy on release, broke a lot of promises made during development and had a story with many plot holes and inconsistencies with the earlier games (though to be fair nearly all Ultima games have them). So it was also shot down by fans, but it's still a decent action oriented RPG with fantastic exploration and atmosphere and clever dungeon architecture and puzzles.
Some people enjoyed Arcanum. It has a big open world and supports many different approaches. However I found it hard to invest myself in the story and universe.
I've heard good things about Divinity: Original Sin but haven't tried myself. Same for the new Wastelands (the old one is interesting but also dated)
