I see there's loads of excitement around with people ordering the new machine, but what can you actually play on it? I didn't think they were backwards compatible with the GP32, so does it come with any games or anything?

I don't mean what would like to play, or what you are hoping to play, but want can you play AT THE MOMENT?

Whats the point of buying the machine if there is nothing you can play on it?

And daminator, you can play those on the GP32 already...

You can't play anything on it at the moment because they haven't been built yet ;)

Craig has been trying to get dev units for a few people before launch, so there will be stuff you can play on it but I don't know what stuff. Craig needs to sell units to make a living, and I'm sure he's doing everything he can to make sure you've gots lots to play with when your gp2x is delivered. I think there's been some talk of commercial games too but I don't know when/if they will appear.

Anyway, what does it matter? Even if there's only one emulator available for a few weeks that's still hundreds more launch titles than any other console comes with ;). And with it using SDL you should see interesting games being ported much quicker than they ever were on the gp32.

Woogal - I thought that was probably the case. I'm just surprised that there seems to be a rush to buy it, when there isn't anything really confirmed in development yet. Sure, there is bound loads of stuff available in the long term, but is there anything that will be available soon?

There`s always something that gets in the way. :p

EDIT:

@Gruntfuggly, There is/will be alot to do on the GP2x on the day of release, Picture viewer, Movie player, Text viewer, Audio player etc. Thats before anything else that may get released is taken into consideration.

As i have already said before and after i pre-ordered my GP2x (Now paid for), Even if nothing else EVER gets released for the GP2x, I will still be extremely happy with my purchase of the GP2x, As it will still be a cool cheap multimedia device, Which it is being sold as first and foremost. If anything else does get released for it, Then that in my eyes is a great bonus.

What ever happened, Ill be happy. :)

Of course, we can't be entirely sure that there'll be anything at launch, but with standard hardware, Linux and SDL some stuff should be appearing VERY fast. Also the plan was that two demos/games will come with every GP2X. Don't know if that is still on target but I did not hear anything against it.

Ive ordered mine, Im pretty much expecting at least one emulator at launch. I mean we've already seen a working GBC emu in the demo movie so I doubt it will be hard to get that up and running after people receive it. And besides Im confident Craig has a few things planned for release because not many people would buy it otherwise.

Well, on the website, it specifically mentions SNES being emulated, which leads me to believe there will be an SNES emulator when it's launched... but even if there isn't, so what? Things will show up really quickly. if they can port a linux gameboy color emulator in 10-30 minutes, you know we won't be waiting very long before we see a huge library of stuff. But none of that matters anyway because I'm not buying mine right away. For one thing, I need money before I can buy it. I just bought a FLU, so I'm low on cash. For another, I'm not a developer, so getting one right away won't benefit the community. I'd LOVE to develop for it, but I have no coding knowlege at all. Which reminds me, that's another reason for some people to get it right away: so they can start making things for it. Plus, I'd rather have a white one, and they're supposedly releasing a white one later... So I'm waiting until there's a white GP2X, unless it's like a year later, it still hasn't happened, and I'm sick of waiting.

The main thing I want from the GP2X is perfect SNES emulation, or at least SNES emulation that's as good as Genesis is with DrMD or NES is with LittleJohnGP. If I can get that, I'll be very happy. Everything else is a bonus.

Mainly RPGs, if it has decent genesis emulation then the Shining force series, if it has decent snes emulation then the final fantasy games. I will probably use it to play music also as I don't have an mp3 player at the moment. I will take a stab at developing something for it, if it uses SDL then it won't be hard to port some current emulators aswell, optimization will take longer.

I'm hoping for a decent SNES emu as it had some very good RPG's.
I don't think there will ever be a decent PSX emu on the GP2X but people might give it a go it will probably end up like the SNES emu on the GP32 that's if it is even possible we won't know until we actually get it. I do hope the movie player is good it would be a nice thing to have at least you wouldn't have to go out and buy the films again like the PSP.
