Usenet

Mithrildor, dunno I get really good speeds on torrents, you just need to use trackers with ratios so people actually seed B) I can easily get up to 12-13mb\sec (~90mbit) in rare ocasions more since I'm on gigabit line :D (Advantages for working for your own ISP along with free 100mbit unlimited access :D )

But I never used usenet and probably never will.. dunno about that..

Thats the good thing about Newgroups, you don't have to rely on people seeding for a decent download speed. It is just quick straight away then once its downloaded you don't have to seed afterwards to ensure you keep a good ratio. Plus the whole problem with Torrents is that you're also distributing the content, which the law doesnt like whereas, in the eyes of the law, downloading only isn't quite as bad. Naturally we all use newgroups and torrents for quick access to Linux distros etc! <_<

There are open source newsgroup clients so I dont think it'll be a problem although its never gonna be something in high demand and personally not something I would use.
