The UVC is in the kernel, so in theory anything in this list should work just fine. As said, my Logitech C200 worked with no problems, just plug and go.

Displayed the video stream with mplayer.

^ You wouldn't need to obtain the drivers yourself. As Stan mentioned in the post right before yours, support for it is in the kernel.

To briefly explain this: Linux is not like Microsoft Windows, in that with supported hardware in this vein, the user is generally not expected to install things themselves to make it work - with supported stuff, it just does, because the kernel itself contains the support for it.

That's correct. As Stan said, he has that camera, and he just plugged it in and used it. ;)

The thing is these are webcam not normal cameras like digital cameras.

If you want to use them like normal camera can that be done.

Yes. There are programs that will open the webcam device and let you take snapshots with it. mplayer will allow you to dump the video/audio stream directly to a file, but then you won't see the playback on screen so won't actually know what you're recording, but it's a start. I'd have to do more research since it's never been my interest to use my Pandora for actual picture taking, but I'm certain there must be something out there that'll do what you want.

I will say though that if simply taking pictures is your intention, you are probably better off buying a cheap digital camera instead of a webcam.

Can you USB cameras match normal cameras in terms of lens quality?

It's there any reason to believe this camera will or will not work with the Pyra? I know it isn't what most people looking for a Pyra camera want, as it is a bit big. It is a good start, though, so maybe they can look at other cameras used with the RPi for something a little smaller. (I know, still not built in. Make the best of it.)

I thought most RPi cameras plugged onto the mainboard instead of into a USB port.

I have this same camera. It is super cheap (in a good way), but works easily without a hub since it is USB 2.0.

I was able to get capture of photo and video working, but the quality of the photos and the low frame rate the Pandora can capture made it really only useful for video chat in my mind. However, I wasn't able to get any video chat software working on the my Pandora...

Almost any webcam you can buy that talks over USB will work with the Pandora and the Pyra, unless something weird's come out in recent years that I've not tried.
