Ubuntu Mobile Internet Device (mid) Edition

Welcome. :) Ubuntu is one of the most discussed topics in here, hit up the search function and you'll find heaps. For the record, official sources have stated that Pandora will run Ubuntu.

People keep confusing operating systems with the applications that run on top of them. Not running Ubuntu MID does not mean that it's capabilities won't be present.

The window manager on that one might be useful for the pandora.

seriously.....why?
To maximize on the Pandora's UMPC abilities, to exploit the brilliant touch screen interface, to possibly make installation and maintainability easier for non-Linux savvy users, to have OS support "outsourced" to Canonical to the Pandora developers can work on games.

It's not like you can't turn off the functionality or abilities to let games run at full speed...

Some very good points there. Now Norm, why not?

Because the packages are compiled for x86 and recompiling that large of a package database takes a good bit of time and effort. Why not a distro that is already compiled for ARM? Then there's little to no work to do, besides maintain the gp2x menu like GUI.

It will most likely be based on OpenEmbedded. Everything but the 'outsorcing to canonical' is possible this way.

Who says they aren't recompiling for ARM? Nokia is working on it now for the N800 series.

It is also in the "meeting minutes" up for consideration by Canonical to do ARM if not explicitly for Nokia but to support even the Cortex core.

I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility.

Of course it would be nice if it got more exposure than just one MID we can't get in the US yet....

Also add here. Nokia working with Ubuntu for an ARM distribution.

Yes it is possible, but as of right now, it is not a fact. Nothing says they will and even if they will it is not available now. Understand? Unless, of course, you can see the future?

Have you looked at those repositories? No Ubuntu Mobile.... Some basic Hildon packages were recompiled, but not the whole set.

While Ubuntu Mobile is nice, it does need an overhaul already. A good bit of its base is python based programs. That's all great for your PC that is plugged into the wall where such interpretation is negligible, but matters a whole lot more when you're talking about a mobile device whose battery life is integral to it's definition.

Don't know if this counts, but Handhelds Mojo already provides several ARM recompiles of various Ubuntu versions. You can see one (I seem to recall reading somewhere that the version used here was "Frisky Firedrake" - so basically Feisty Fawn for ARM - although I can't seem to find where this was said, now) running on the Beagle Board in this video. :p

Just remember that all this is thanks to contributions from intel. I'm not sure if these Ubuntu ppl have business hats on, but it wouldn't make much sense to recompile to ARM unless it was to show how Intel wins. :)

Ofcourse, being opensource, someone else could take it and recompile it for arm, but without any ARM devices with 512MB of ram, this could turn into a lengthy exercise.

well i read another topic on running windows on it, and you would start it using dosbox

here it is:

Ok, I'll clear up some misconceptions for you. :) DOSBox is used to run old MS DOS programs, and possibly early versions of MS Windows. The emphasis being on "MS" - it only applies to programs that run in Microsoft operating systems. In any case, something running in an emulator such as DOSBox is not a viable OS option, as the emulator itself will be running on top of the Linux OS. And chewing up a great deal of system resources.

Ubuntu, being a distribution of Linux, will not run in a Microsoft environment. The good news is that it doesn't need to; it can be compiled to run natively on Pandora.

As for installation, I'm not sure how it will work. It may be a one click process or you may have to get your hands a little dirty. Someone else might be able to offer an educated guess here.
