Thoughts On Less Than Perfect Emulation

Personally I am greatly that people take the time of their data to write FREE emulators and programs for the GP32. Sure some emulators and games are 100% perfect but are playable most of the time and some like with SNES you have to disable sound and works great with out sound.

Everyone has to remember that the GP32 is emulating these devices and will always be slower since it's emulation and these emulators are created by creative people who are giving them time and energy to do this and I think people should be grateful for the emulation that we do have and in time their will be improvements etc.

Basically either don't use the emulators that aren't perfect in your eyes and if you do then SHUT UP and don't wine or complain.

If you do want to make a difference then learn how to code for your self and take the time to write a better emulator or just email the author, be polite and give them constructive feed back and be willing to assist them with testing.

This is just my two cense not aimed or directed at anyone.

and what do you guys think of some emulators that are just for the hell of it like a PSONE and N64 emulator, Saturn, jaguar. etc..

they wud probably run at 2 fps a min but just seein something show up wud be fun to watch wudnt it.

Remember when gpquake "came out" it was sopposedly 1 fps or somtehing and it got better, and maybe some new gameparks will work better for emulations. as i dont think gamepark will be supplied 180mhz chips forever, as their supliers minimum specs are bound to go up?!

I recon we might still have the same white gp32 but with increasing specs, what do you's think (180, 200, 233, 250, 300???)

I don't think so. The GP32 has exactly the same chip as before (the overcloking has nothing to do with new units, my old NLU goes up to 214). Also, the GP32 seems to be out of production.

I hardly think my first post was "whining", nor was I complaining about lacking SNES, GBA etc. -emulation. It's not always that easy to write a post so the intended meaning comes through... Especially in another language than your mothers-tongue.
If anything I was praising the possibilities the GP32 allready provide.

The initial points I tried to make was:

- That limits of a system (like the GP32) are not JUST boundries. They offer "new" things to discover and appreciate.
- A fictional Super-system that was powerful enough to emulate everything, would give little reason to try anything else than what you allready knew.

I'm actually trying to be a bit philosophical ;)

Although I've had emulators for... well... everything on PC, I never played anything else than Amiga, C64, SNES, PSX, N64 & MAME. Amiga & C64 was pure nostalgia and the sole reason I ventured into emulation in the first place. SNES, PSX & N64 was "just" because it was the coolest thing to be able to emulate (and thats how I discovered I love RPG's).
Did I have SMS and Mega-Drive emulation on my PC? Yes - but I didn't really explore these. Having perfect SMS-emulation on the GP32 made me appreciate it and it's games - and in time appreciate the same for Mega-Drive when that was perfected.

Now I'm actually grateful that the GP32 is limited and not a 400 mhz pocketPC (or whatever the standard was at that time), since I've discovered many games and genres on that account.

This post is actually just to clarify my previous post :)

Why on earth would it be fun to run something at 2 frames per minute ?? What is the point of a programmer spending nights and days doing an emulator which is gonna run like a bitch ?

If its something which is perhaps possible to get near to 100% (eg SNES) then its worth it but whats the point in spending weeks and days to do an emulator which is gonna be impossible to work on the GP32 ?

Waste of time

If the specs were increased then yeah its a sensible idea but not at the moment.

Yeah, it does suck that SNES, GBA, GB/C, LYNX, AMIGA emulation isn't perfect, but it can or will be. I play whatever good games I can find and don't play just emu's or homebrew, but I'm grateful for both.

Have you tried the latest Lynx emu? It is pretty much full speed w/sound at 150-166. The sound is a little slow but the games play very well. I just played Robotron and rampart on it last night and it was fine.

Lots of project are started like that, They are normally proofs of concept, To see if it can be done, Is it easy/hard to do, A challenge. Maybe of no use on the originating hardware (too slow, not practical etc), But could be used as a basis for a project on another platform etc. Or, And this is a big or, A code compatable hardware upgrade for the GP were released (Mmmmm, Now where did i put that code?). For fun or for a laugh is another reason why people do it, Or, Because thay can.

well, pretty much out of production. I guess they have a certain stock available, and will shell that out. I mean, come on. There aren't exactly many people getting a GP32 nowadays. I bet they'll let their stock run out and perhaps will start making Gp32 2 or something. O retire from the handheld market completely. They didn't make the right choices most of the time (EU launch pretty much canceled (apart from spain and france), way too late Spain/France launch etc.), so I wouldn't be suprised if they made military supply again (that's what they normaly do, isn't it?).

Where does all of this information come from? Or is it just a guess?

I think Craigix would know this. If he doesn't sell many anymore or they can't be ordered he would know that.

Yeah i know a fair few start off like that and then are improved week in week out but a PSX2 or a N64 emulator ? That would never work well on the current GP32 unless there was a new model

So at the moment that would be a waste of time
