I'll break out the champagne when he actually receives the samples, or someone accepts an order for the IC's :)

anyone know what the "new chip" is, or is mirko still deciding?

I think he has a list of possible chips (chips that he CAN buy) and is gonna choose one of them.

Why ARM? That's used in everything now and is getting a little boring. We need something new, like MIPS to play with :)

No x86! xD
Seriously, I think ARM would be the best choice.

Is mirko considering any processors with FPUs? A GPU would be nice.

But to be honest we should make sure that the power consumption is such that you can get 10 hours usage out of whatever batteries it uses.

Edit: What exactly are the pros and cons of MIPS against ARM, or other processor types?

*puts gp2x order on hold*

Hasty much? :D

He's still yet to even decide on a chip and see if he can use it. Not to mention there's introducing the new chip in the the blue prints and making sure it dosent use more power than two GP2Xs and a PSP combined. (which is probably an even better reason to stick with something ARM related.)

Yeah thats what I was thinking. It will be a year before anything starts happpening.
And I cannot wait a year.

And other CPU manufacturer ?
there re some other very good arm cpu :
TI OMAP2
The TI OMAP series is unfortunately produced and distributed exclusively for major mobile phone (and e.g. mobile phone / palmtop convergence devices) manufacturers. It is not available through any kind of "normal" distribution channel. If you look carefully at the product pages you will see an "availability disclaimer" or similar that alludes to this.

What about that Dreamcast-on-a-chip we heard about a while back? That would be slick.
True, but that seems to be vaporware so far, and might only wind up in unsuitable ASSP type chips (in particular Renesas seems to like to target in-car navigation systems).

ARM actually licenses the PowerVR MBX core and includes it in their mobile multimedia pseudo-platform called "PrimeXsys Platform" (PXP). The pseudo-partnumbers for this seem to be ARM926 and ARM1136 (these are not actual chips, but PXP cores licensable from ARM) However, I have not seen any actual off-the-shelf chips that implement this. I've seen lots of talk in press releases of MBX licensing by several big players in the microcontroller market (Samsung, ST Microelectronics, Philips, Freescale), but when I actually try to find ordering information (or even detailed technical information), everything seems to dry up. This might have something to do with the mobile phone aspect, since the actual modem/transceiver part of such chips probably prevents it from being generally available.

Disclaimer: I'm not actually a computer engineer, I just play one on Internet forums. ;)
