Bird flu is in the news again.
Quote: "On Thursday, the CDC reported its first severe case of bird flu in the U.S. found in a patient in Louisiana who was infected from a backyard poultry flock. The Louisiana case was first confirmed by health officials Friday, adding to the total of 61 reported human cases of H5 bird flu reported in the United States. Another severe case of H5N1 has been reported in a teen in British Columbia."

Luckily there is already a vaccine.
Quote: "Wen on Sunday also urged the Biden administration to approve the H5N1 vaccine, which is already developed and contracted with manufacturers to make almost 5 million doses but awaits FDA authorization – a key difference from the beginning stages of COVID. 'There's research done on it. They could get this authorized now, and also get the vaccine out to farm workers and to vulnerable people,' Wen said. 'I think that's the right approach, because we don't know what the Trump administration is going to be doing around bird flu. If they have people coming in with anti-vaccine stances, could they hold up vaccine authorization? If they don't want to know how much bird flu is out there, could they withhold testing? I mean, that's a possibility.'"

Well, there's lots of money in pharma and I don't know if the FDA is corrupt or something, but in general I tend to think, drugs need time to assess they do more good than harm, so it now looks like they're proposing to steal the time scientists (and civil servants) need to ensure safety just because some politicians are stupid. So they're forcing the scientists to act as stupidly as politicians. And once everybody acts stupid there's no longer any way to vote well...
If you want the FDA to go faster maybe the government should have given them more budget and personnel. Rushing things is no solution, as Musk won't probably learn but will show anyone while trying.
Having anti-vacs in government is as bad as having rushing pro-vacs that have so much faith in any vac that forgo proper authorization.

Maybe that space elevator made from diamond is possible after all.

If you like Sci-Fi, check out Alastair Reynolds. That's the best stuff I've read so far. IIRC Chasm City is the story with the space elevator.

No, the Nintendo DS with Super Mario 64 DS was released before the PSP. And Super Mario 64 DS is just a remake of Super Mario 64, which is a proper console game.

Some people I work with are PC gamers and scoff at Switch graphics. Recent console generation of graphical improvements have been less than before. 4K vs 5K vs 8K, better raytracing, photo-realism.. yawn. This suggests that Nintendo might catch up in practical terms, if graphics are no longer a distinguishing factor. Since Nintendo have the best games I think the Switch 2 will dominate if it's graphics are not substantially worse. These PC gamers think BotW/TotK graphics are lacking. I think they're compulsive consumers.

Because it's 2025: are there flying cars already?

And what about parallel universes? (well, there is still no proof yet. Quantum chip only sparked a debate about it)

I'd been forgetting to switch off my wireless mouse recently so Peony started switching it off for me. I'd switch my PC off then go to bed, and while I was laid in bed realise that I'd forgotten to switch my mouse off. I didn't bother getting out of bed to deal with it because it's winter, so cold. My mouse wasn't working when I switched my PC on in the morning, I thought it may have been due to the battery dying overnight so turned it over preparatory to fitting a new one when I discovered that it was switched off.

The GBA with its SNES ports is "one of the first" if we're dead set on ignoring the original GB's arcade ports and epic RPGs. PSP was certainly one of the first handhelds to play PlayStation 1 and 2 games though! (if we ignore the ones on DS) :)

I found this rather interesting. Especially how key government stimulus is. Also insight into the little factories. Makes me feel the EU & UK are thinking about things wrong. The standard of living in the UK is going down.
