The Communication Cube

I got a YMCA membership today. Should I tell them I'm not young or Christian?

It's $22 for this month, and $54 for every month after. Not even sure if I'll ever see the place again yet. I did put their ID card on my keyring.

I once forgot my key and my mom was out for a day, so I had to sleep outside. So I biked around and found a hotel that looked cheap (mind you, I had enough money to sleep in an normal hotel, as I carried lots of banknotes (I think around 60 or 70 guilders if I counted the coins too) just in case I wanted to buy electronics during our lunchbreaks - work was in the city center), which resulted to be a whorehouse. So instead, I found the local shelter (that's all I knew for sure) and registered (10 or 25 guilders, I do not remember but it was a single fee; had to show my ID too). I slept there for 5 guilders in a bunkbed in a room with 4 people that had room for 8. Did not shower there (an extra 3 euro and you get a soap and toothpaste+brush; I did brush my teeth, but the shower was meh) Then went to work, eating the breakfast bun which was too little so from my local italian I bought a ciabatta for 8 guilders and ate it with a drink from my work (free coffee machine).

Did you know that we share 99% of our DNA with chimps, if we ignore 18% of their genome and 25% of ours?

I am starting to get used to living on the real terminal.

I am using elinks right now and it is a pretty cool browser. I also use ed to type this post. If you use elinks and select a text input field then you can by default use ctrl-t to open up an editor. I am not sure how the right editor gets chosen, but of course my $EDITOR variable is "ed" so maybe it uses that. Why would I not want to use the standard editor as my default editor? Only degenrates use non-standard editors. It says it in the manual page "Ed is the 'standard' text editor in the sense that it is the original editor
for Unix, and thus widely available."
So it is not only the standard editor, but also an original editor and in fact it is not just any original editor it is the original editor for Unix!
For me that settles it.

I still have X11 installed, though. Sometimes I have to fall back on it for some inferior websites which need js support.

At least I do not need the framebuffer for PDFs anymore. I use Calibre using the server and elinks and I read the PDFs using pdftohtml and elinks. It works great.

I can also view images using fim, unfortunately the framebuffer does not work so I have to view images using "fim -t" as text-art. It works decent but seems to require a lot of CPU effort.
At least the framebuffer works for mpv so I can still watch videos in normal mode. But sometimes I prefer to use tct (i.e. Unicode graphics) anyway.

Not every feature is feature creep, some are useful tools.
And, would you prefer the original atmosphere in which live formed on earth over what we've got now?

An article just reminded me, today is 4/20.

I assume all the European forum members have already converged on Amsterdam.

I use tiv to verify images over a text mode ssh link to my server. Unfortunately it only uses whole character blocks; I've seen some curious code that uses half graphics and sets foreground and background colours independently to give you twice the vertical resolution, but I couldn't trust the code, so I don't use that. Perhaps fim does that too, I'll have to see if I can get that to try it out; it's not in the arch repos though, but it is in AUR. Ah, I see from it's screenshots it literally does do ascii art, i.e it's monochrome. I personally find colours more useful in identifying pics, so that's not for me.

I am glad that you agree. Some may argue that ed is wasteful because of some of it's features, but those features generally have uses that make them actually quite worthwhile to have.

For example, take the * prompt feature. In ed one can toggle between having a * prompt only when in command mode or never having any prompt at all. Some say that this is wasteful and that there ought to never be a prompt at all. But the * prompt provides extra protection against confusion and therefore against the waste of resources and damage that such confusion could entail if it occured. This protection can be very good to have when e.g. working on important files or under critical circumstances.

I always endeavor to stay balanced when it comes to bloat and minimalism as much as it is necessary and reasonable in order to achieve a perfect balance between these two extremes. However, this balance is easy to maintain regarding text editors because there is one editor which is the standard text editor. That editor is ed. And like you implied, ed's features are not feature creep, they are useful tools.

After watching the Apple Event this evening, which was a bit disappointing as I hoped for a sort of G-Shock Like Apple Watch , I think it was good to buy a Pyra instead..
the new IMac is System on a Chip for 1490 $$, and still no Optical Drive..
Airtags are maybe a good idea when you lost your stuff often, but I carry my Things in my Pants so maybe one Airtag to find my Pants??

The overall presentation was quite watchable, although the „This Show is my favorite on Apple TV, and I looking forward for the second session „ from the CEO sounded a bit faked ^^

I wonder: will whe get a Show like the one from Apple sometimes in the future also from Dragonbox CEO Evildragon??

still no Optical Drive
Won't be long 'til they put a camera in there with high enough resolution, so that it can properly read a DVD you hold in front of it.

Totally unrelated:
I just learned, when you have a halfbaked function that is supposed to return a string (but doesn't yet) and use it in a constructor's member initialisation list, g++' optimiser makes that weird stuff happens at runtime. Focusing on something other I had forgotten about that stupid function and it took me a while to figure that one out.

They allready put a 1080 p Camera in the IMac,
I mean, ok the Pyra also has no Optical Drive, but at least this is a bit smaller...
they even included the Ethernet in the Wall Plug so that on your desk you have only the IMac, Keyboard and Mouse and no other cables.. ...
the oposide of the Cable Salad on my Desk..

Yepp, exactly, allthough i though whit the Pyra, the Cable Salad will be much smaller, but as im not that often anymore on my desk, i wasnt able yet to put the mess away..
When HDMI is ready, i only need a few Cables: HDMI, USB Cable to HUB, Micro USB from the USB Power Subbly to the Pyra, and USB Cable to the Keyboard, as the Mouse is Bluetooth.. Printer works over WLAN..

Darn, my state actually managed to hit drought conditions in the middle of April. We have a fire weather warning from 2 PM to 8 PM today, which basically says if any fires happen, we're screwed. Fortunately, we're supposed to get like an inch of rain on Saturday.
