I don't care either way. If they can make it cost effective, and implement it without compromising the overall structure, I really don't care. Anything less than that and no way.

It would be excellent for use as a PDA, or for controlling a simple task like a music or video player that dictates no rational reason to open the unit and get at the controls, when all you need is the screen... the screen looks really cumbersome to try and use with the unit open clamshell style, at least as long as it's up top like that. There's definitely a reason the DS lite has the touchscreen on the bottom, it's far better supported by your hand and not by a more delicate hinge. Unless of course Pandora has Thinkpad hinges made from depleted uranium tank armor.

Why can't you just hold it from the bottom? I don't understand why everyone keeps ignoring that concept.

You can only support it with one hand because you're holding the stylus with another, or using your other hand to tap the display. A hinge with any give at all, as in one that doesn't have a deathgrip on the upper half of the chassis, will reduce your accuracy striking the display and make for a frustrating and uncomfortable experience trying to use it. Especially if you're trying to drag windows around the screen on a desktop environment. That would piss me off pretty royally trying to do it for any length of time... folding it over for heavy touchscreen use would be very comfortable.

That might leave the device completely unsuitable for browsing internet porn.

All right, I don't want a pandora any more.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ahem, anyways, what I meant to say is that the hinge probably isn't going to have a lot of loose movement in it. My HP laptop has a screen tha doesn't wigle at all, yet it's easy to open and close. It just needs to be a good firmness.

yeah that is a good topic actually. how will the pandora cater to the porn viewers out there? what kind of attachments will be sold seperately for this niche market? marketing should at least hint at possible porn viewing and such activities. ;)

EDIT: how many of you guys that voted that it is fine as is after reading these last couple of posts are like "damn! I wish I could change my vote!!" lol j/k

MWestion said a tablet Pandora is not going to happen, so this speculation isn't very productive. :)
had no idea he ever said that. link?

Even better, here's a quote:

This type of sensor also makes the rotating LCD option more difficult so you can be pretty sure it will stay clamshell. :)
Use the little arrow next to the title of the quote to jump to that post.

Maybe there's a market for a "second edition" tablet Pandora? Sure, it's more than a little early for that, but if people don't voice their opinion you'd never know.

Tell people there's a second edition, and sales for the first edition will drop dramatically. :)

If sales for the first generation drops "dramatically" by the announcement of a second generation device with identical specs, then there is a design flaw in the first generation that has to be addressed in the first place.
B!

eh its all good to me. I mean I dont need tablet mode just thought it would be a good idea. also thanks for that quote javajake thought I read all of mwestons posts on this thing. must have missed that one... :(

This is one of the few well-stated comments on touchscreen usability.

As someone who owns a tablet, and a Psion 5mx and a Psion Netbook, i can assure that it is possible to have a very nice clamshell touchscreen experience. This is possible on the Psions because the screen flips out to a locked position and touch sensitivity is quite high.

So your concerns are valid. If the 800x480 touch display requires too much pressure, or if the hinge isn't stiff enough, or doesn't click-into-position, using stylus could be problematic.

However, you must also realize that the pandora designers are not mentally retarded, and have clearly demonstrated their ability to integrate a lot of variables into a design that is highly ergonomic. You can pretty much rest assured that the touchscreen setup will not suffer the flaws you mentioned.
