Update and clarification: This behavior had been spotted only once and it was probably due to a warm GPU due to too much gaming. A day later the system booted up fine again.

So, the real news here is that the Steam Machine also uses the front red light indicator for a failure.

Apparently they switched it off for a few hours, rebooted and it started up again. Clearly there is something there, but a bit early re the claims likening it to the red ring of death.
