This may help the market more than hurt it, but I still hate sony for this.
YOUR GONNA SCREW UP GP32 YOU FREAKING ********!!!!!!!!!!
Lets all agree to something, no matter what new handheld comes out, you must stay with gamepark. I know I will.

Different markets. This PSP thing will be all about commercial games.. Who buys the GP32 for commercial games? It wont affect the GP32 at all so don't worry.
i agree with you there buddy. the smart people go with open platform. kids go commercial cause they dont know better.

I think Mofokubik sums it up real nice in his post.

If you like RPG´s get a PS2
If you like FPS get an XBOX
If you like cute playable games get a GameCube
If you shower your wife with gifts, get them all ;)

Everybody likes different games, everybody should be happy with the console (s)he owns.

@jjthe2: Sony want to target this as a massmarket machine (the next walkman). I´ll doubt it will cost $400. I´m thinking about $149 - $199 (remember it´s still 1½ years away, and technollegy advances fast)
The best thing that ever hit fps games is the pc. It blows away all the consoles trust me. ex. geforce 4 + battlefield 1942 or medal of honor allied assualt. list goes on and on.

3D rendering will be enhanced by the employment of curved surfaces (NURBS) along with conventional polygons

I would have to say - whoever wrote that particular part of the h/w profile, was talking our of their arse.

I say that because 'NURBS' (Non Uniform Rational B-Splines), are a method for creating geometry (polygons). So to say that something uses NURBS and conventional polygons is a little odd...

*EDIT*

I've been told that OpenGL has had the ability to interpret NURBS for some time... so it could well be I who is talking out of his arse... <_< bugger...

@WaWaWang
Yes, but not all people have 1000s of dollars to throw away on a good pc. I bought this pc for internet, and a few simple games like halflife. I bought both pc and xbox for ~450dollars, and it was a good choice.

I dont know where you buy your computer parts, but I dont think I could get a geforce4ti card for 100$
And even if you do, that is only one part of the system, you will still need to buy a cpu, ram, motherboard, powersupply, case, soundcard, harddrive, os, modem/lan card, monitor, etc....

I read the specs on IGN. The thing will be like the gamegear, eat up batteries like nothing. A backlit screen of 4.5 inches and a disc player? Thats stupid and you know it. Personally I hate sony too. They live off of there name which WAS good until something or other. The only reason the games look on par to GC and Xbox's is because they work like labourers getting the best out while developers for the other consoles lay back, but the sony developers get the money for it. Also the GB thing, no competition means no pushing it. It really sucks poo.

If it really is single chip, then it wont eat up as much power as you think it will. My uncle is designing the first single chip cell phone for some company, he told me it was really efficient. But still, I see no need to use cds for handhelds yet....Im sure that nintendo will overpower psp with some new handheld. You can obviously tell this is sony's desperate attempt of trying to dominate the gaming market. They saw that nintendo did a half ass job on gba, and thought this was the perfect time to take over the handheld gaming market. PSP looks nice, but it probably looks better than it actually is.
OK, im done now.
Im not going to verbally bash the machine anymore until I try it out for myself.

I think Nintendo should be worried, you can;t argue they have been resting on their laurels with two launches of the GBA and it's still not quite right. Coupled with that the dodgy games support.

As for power consumption of the PSP it uses a built in lithium ion battery much like the GBA SP. So no worries there. Sony are not going to mess this one up I can assure you!

The PSP is a new hand held made by sony (which already makes it sold in america, as well as globally) and has an amazing disk medium of 1.8 gigs! It also has the ability to use 3d rendering using polygons as well as NURBS. It uses MPEG4 for video and has a rechargable ion lithium battery, that probably comes with and adaptor. Its also coming with an official development platform in the fall of 2003.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sony Computer Entertainment Prepares For Market Expansion With Creation Of A New Handheld Entertainment Platform

Company Unveils Plans to Extend PlayStation® Family of Products with “PSP”

Los Angeles, May 13, 2003 – Enhancing its strong platform strategies, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI) announced today plans to expand its in-home entertainment to outside the home with a new, all-in-one portable entertainment platform, “PSPTM.”

Scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2004, the company’s goal is to extend the reach of PlayStation to a broader audience, allowing consumers to enjoy gaming and other entertainment content anytime, anywhere. Specific details on release plans and pricing will be disclosed at a later date.

The introduction of “PSP” highlights the company’s long-awaited foray into the portable entertainment market. With unmatched advantages of the Sony Group, such as global brand awareness, superior technologies in the most advanced semiconductor processes, “PSP” further broadens entertainment experiences into the portable arena.

The foundation of this new platform is Universal Media Disc (UMD), which comprises of a 60mm optical disc (1.8 GB) in a cartridge, developed by the Sony Group, utilizing its latest disc technologies. Compared to the out-dated mask ROM cartridge, optical disc has huge advantages such as shorter turn around time for manufacturing, larger data capacity and lower media costs. The latest copy-protection technology will be applied to offer content developers and publisher a safe and copy-protected environment.

“PSP” will be equipped with a wide screen 480 x 272 pixel (16 by 9) TFT LCD monitor with a backlight, and powered by super chipsets utilizing the latest 90 nm semiconductor technology. For graphics, 3D rendering will be enhanced by the employment of curved surfaces (NURBS) along with conventional polygons. Video quality will also be enhanced with MPEG4, which delivers quality equivalent to DVD video at a low data rate.

“PSP” will have an USB 2.0 port for further expandability and connectivity to other devices, such as “PSP,” PlayStation 2 and many other systems, along with a Memory StickTM slot for network applications and data transportability in a wireless environment.

SCEI will offer PC-based development tools starting from fall 2003 for the preparation of a new range of computer entertainment content. A new license scheme for “PSP” software development will be announced in summer 2003. Pursuing the founding principles of the PlayStation business, Sony Computer Entertainment will expand its efforts to support content developers to create new forms of computer entertainment.

Together with its business partners, SCEI aims to aggressively promote this new platform to further broaden the arena of entertainment.

“Just as PlayStation and PlayStation 2 revolutionized in-home computer entertainment, we aim to become a new driving force in the portable entertainment platform arena,” said Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “The world of PlayStation encompasses hundreds of millions of users worldwide, most of whom view computer entertainment as part of their everyday lives. We look forward to extending the experience through a portable entertainment platform, and are excited about the possibilities and impact ‘PSP’ will have on the market. Along with game applications, ‘PSP’ will have a huge potential for delivering other forms of entertainment as well as live entertainment through the network, anywhere, anytime. This is the ‘Walkman’ of the 21st century.”

The reason why hand helds are currently low spec is because of battery limitations, you simply cant get around them. Even sony couldnt make tghat big a leap and get the batteries to last 2 hours + on a machine as high spec as that.

I dont think it's gonna be a competitor for a while yet... different target audience. If you want to get homebrew stuff and emulators, you'd still but a GP32, even when the PSP comes out. I mean who, honestly, has bought a GP32 for the commercial games???

Looks like the GP has a new competator

As much as i think this new console does look good, and known me ill add it to my collection, i dont see it as a competator, it'll be a commercial game only jobbie.

It'll have some great new games (Tomb Raider on a handheld anyone? :D) but it still wont beat my emus on the GP. and who knows what GamePark have up there sleeve, Q4 2004 is a long way away :)
